96% of the planet does not have a vote in the US elections. But whoever leads the US will have a profound effect on the entire planet.

When asked about climate change, Trump boasted about getting richer by drilling for oil. (youtube.com/watch?v=pl1Rnz4zNk…)

On vaccines, he wants an anti-vaxxer in charge of health (theguardian.com/us-news/2024/n…). Millions could die from this, especially in developing nations that depend on US aid.

On nuclear weapons, Trump wants legal immunity so he can use them (vice.com/en/article/trump-nucl…).

If you are one of the privileged lucky 4% who do have a vote, *please* use it to stop him, for the sake of all humanity. πŸ™

It's curious that the Doomsday clock has never been so close to 12 o'clock than during Biden administration and the hawkish Department of State. Luckily 96% of the world is not US and your minority will collapse from inside.
in reply to Giuseppe Michieli

It's not curious at all. The people who set the clock said it was due to Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine.

They even issued a press release about it:

thebulletin.org/2023/01/press-…

"The Doomsday Clock was set at 90 seconds to midnight, due largely but not exclusively to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the increased risk of nuclear escalation."

"...worst of all, Russia’s thinly veiled threats to use nuclear weapons remind the world that escalation of the conflictβ€”by accident, intention, or miscalculationβ€”is a terrible risk."

Poor US, poor Americans! After sowing discord, waging wars everywhere, with hundred thousands dead civilians, now they are crying a bad guy is forcing them to suffer! Trillions of US$ from citizens wallet ended in the hands of military-industrial complex, oil companies thanks to Mr Putin!

@GMIK69

The Doomsday Clock is warning about the entire world suffering, not just one country. Nuclear war would mean a nightmare-like global catastrophe.

I'm not clear why you brought up the Doomsday Clock if you want to disregard its warnings?

in reply to FediThing πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

I am seeing repeated massive US/NATO nuclear readiness exercises recently. But, at a large, Democrat or Republican Presidents waged wars against foreign countries, destroying them, causing immense suffering, and paid nothing in political terms. World security is a stake because of the monster dimension of military-industrial complex of the US, POTUS immaterial.
in reply to Giuseppe Michieli

The Doomsday Clock setting you brought up was due to Putin's invasion of Ukraine and his threats to use nuclear weapons.

This conversation seems to be going round in circles?

Putin invasion was not a casual accident in the post-1989 history. It is the result of the breakneck spread of NATO eastward towards Russia, rightly wary of this. Why had Ukraine to be on NATO too? Is it possible for Mexico or Cuba make alliances with China? What would happen in this case? Consequences of US foreign policy is not recognized by the majority of opinionists. US has serious issues is coexist with other countries. It's no a safe behaviour.
in reply to FediThing πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

Do you really think that Israel - currently bombing Gaza Strip, West Bank, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Iran is not pushing the clock ahead? Ah, yes! It's an US ally! We must reject these behaviours, wherever they originate, from Russia, US, Israel, Iran. We have not longer time to spare confonting pandemics and climate disasters.

@GMIK69

All I'm doing is quoting the reasons the clock committee gave for their decision. You were the one who brought up the clock?

On Gaza, Trump is Netanyahu's preferred candidate. Trump accuses Harris and Biden of not supporting Netanyahu enough, Trump says Biden is "holding Netanyahu back". There's a Bernie Sanders video all about this, and why it is extremely important to stop Trump by voting against him:

I am not a great fan of American political arena, for many reasons. It's true that now Demcorats are in charge and did nothing to stop Israel to commit massacres. Nothing.
in reply to FediThing πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

I believe 4% is actually on the high end of things (assuming you calculate the entire voting population of the USA).. there's only 7 states deciding the presidential election and I would be surprised if the voting population of those even make up 1% of the worlds population

not sure if the cry for help in what I perceive as small-ish echo chamber is going to do anything, but here's hoping against hope that it does 🀞

in reply to FediThing πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

I have been drilling this into the heads of all Americans I know. Please vote. Because I don't fucking get to, and it's my future as well.
in reply to FediThing πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

p.s. There are lots of resources for voting in US elections here:

➑️ vote.org

Vote.org is a non-partisan site which includes advice on how to vote, local voting info for each state, and a national phone hotline to contact if someone tries to stop you voting.

If you want official government info on voting, that's a different site at:

➑️ vote.gov

If you have a vote, please use it. Most of the vulnerable people depending on you to stop Trump have no vote in this election (see the post above).

Good luck everyone ❀️

@josh I never though i would see one day soleone proud to vote for a wannabe neofascist ecocidal dictator.

@stemy
I know!!!
It's crazy how many people actually voted for her!
in reply to joshua

@josh You mean for him. AFAIK, unlike Trump, Harris did not prosecuted queer, women and racised people and had not open dictatorial ambitions.
in reply to Stemy

@stemy

That's a troll account, all their posts are replies promoting Trump. Best thing is to block it..

in reply to FediThing πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

The guy is pretty civil for a troll account, he even recognized that we'll never agree. I think it's more a random elector in good faith even if he's wrong than a troll.
in reply to FediThing πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

I agree with your perspective, only it's actually even less than 4% because of the way our US voting is structured. It seems like only voters in seven swing states will decide the outcome of this election. We desperately need some deliberative, grassroots democratic reforms.
