I referenced my own photo from Japan for this one - the Itsukushima shrine on Miyajima. This is actually the third attempt I've made at painting this image, the first two being abandoned years ago through getting bogged down in details. For this attempt, I decided to take a loose, painterly approach, rather than accuracy, and I at last got it over the finish line.
