Wow people are stupid... The feds are banning Chinese owned TikTok over “security concerns” so people are switching to the next Chinese app?! — Not to say American tech is any more trustworthy when it comes to privacy.

“People looking for alternative social media apps should be cautious about the privacy implications of sharing information with an app that has not yet seen substantial public scrutiny outside of China,” EFF’s @cooperq told @verge. theverge.com/2025/1/16/2434524…

they're not stupid. They know exactly what they're doing. They know TikTok isn't being banned because of security concerns, it's being banned because Zuck and Bezos want it banned. I'm not saying it's a wise protest, but they're not stupid.

@jcrabapple Well I think seeing past the politics around the TikTok ban is one thing but apathy over digital privacy is another... People aren't “stupid" but they are apathetic or lazy about digital privacy since “surveillance capitalism” is the norm.

I don't disagree with you about the problem with apathy towards privacy. For some people, the benefits outweigh the risks.

@jcrabapple I get the impression a lot of people are going to another Chinese app on purpose as a kind of big FU to the US government for banning TikTok for dumb reasons. I personally find it hilarious that the ban is backfiring so spectacularly, especially when I read that young people are absolutely outraged to discover how affordable everything is in China. I know how repressive the Chinese government is and wish everyone did, but I am wondering if what young people are learning will lead to some major political changes here as we enter a legit new robber baron era.
