After a great week for Linux, with the releases of Fedora 40 and today Ubuntu 24.04, I would be interested to know which operating system the Fediverse in my "bubble" uses? Linux? Windows? Or macOS or even a BSD? More than one?

Please write in the comments which distribution or version! Thanks for participating and SHARING!

I really hope #Volla can pull it off. They're surely in a better position for it than most. It'd be even better if they could ship their stuff to US or JP.

These days I've all but given up on dedicated #linux tablets/phones. Even though we have loads of em that are capable of running #postmarketOS, most of em still fall short of usable most of the time. The only folks who seem to have nailed the linux handheld experience is the #SailfishOS team. But of course there's a problem with that'n as well; if you're outside the EU, you'll have to suffer the trimmed-down DIY version of it.

These days I've found it much more practical to run something in a #chroot environment within #termux. I runs quite well on nearly any #android capable device via #proot, or even better in a proper chroot on a rooted one.

Hi all. I've got an older #computer running #Windows10, and I'm thinking about putting #Linux on it since I've always wanted to try it out and think this computer might run better with Linux. I read a topic on audiogames.net about Linux #accessibility, and I saw a few recommendations for #distros to try out. To any #blind Linux users, is #NixOS a good one for a beginner, or should I try #LinuxMint or #Ubuntu? Also, what's the best way to install Linux and replace #Windows? Thanks.

If Fedora 40 had a headlining change, it might be @kde Plasma 6. The KDE SIG have brought over all the hard work from that community to give you a solid desktop experience from day 1.

We're also pushing technology forward by making this release Wayland-only, though X11 apps will still work!

Plasma 6 is also available for our Kinoite users. :kinoite:

We are proud of the stable reputation that Fedora Workstation has built over the years. We hope to add to that with Fedora Workstation 40!

Workstation brings @gnome 46 to users with tweaks to the Settings and Files apps. You can now use Remote Login to connect to a computer even if it doesn't have an active session.

Fedora IoT 40 got some cool under-the-hood changes. :fedora_iot:

First is that Fedora IoT now uses the unified core model, making them the last rpm-ostree variant to make the switch.
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/Fedora_IoT_Unified_Core

Second is that Fedora IoT will be the first rpm-ostree variant to be a bootable container image. You will literally be swapping to newer and newer container images when you update, which really emphasizes the idea of atomicity.

TIL Fedora is packaging a web browser app I developed for elementary OS, stopped updating over three years ago, and marked as end-of-life two years ago—yet it happily shows up in Fedora 40 if you search my name. It crashes on launch, so it doesn’t even work…

WHY??

Edit: I guess the package is being EOL'd in Fedora due to it no longer building and this thread, huzzah! My recommendation to distros: don’t package random apps and then not maintain them/communicate with upstream.

Installed Linux MInt on an old laptop.

Trying to find out if 8GB RAM will cut it for office work like Teams and Zoom via Chrome, or are the Linux software tools better. Any suggestions?

#Linux #LinuxMint

Alrighty... So with Windows 11 rolling out ads to the start menu I am going to start looking for a Linux daily driver. I have been eyeing Mint but does anyone have any recommendations?

Specific things I am looking for:
-Gaming (Nividia GPU)
-Not "fiddly" - I just want it to work.

Bazzite 3.0 is delayed indefinitely at the moment, due to some technical issues.

I've just rebased to Bazzite testing to get KDE Plasma 6.1 and it's working great so far.

EDIT: Bazzite 3.0 is out!

Is this a regression on Fedora 40 that anyone else is seeing? Apps that launch full-screen are launching at @1x resolution even though my screen is set @2x. Un-maximizing the app fixes it.

Since I switched back to PopOS, I've been using Distrobox containers to install newer versions of apps that aren't available on PopOS. It's got me thinking that I should switch to an immutable OS. Sadly, I've yet to find one that will work with my VPN provider.

Can anyone prove me wrong?

The fact that #accessibility nowadays is better in #videogames than on #linux is not a compliment to videogames

Just checked and yes, the screen reader is still broken in Fedora 40. (Cannot be controlled; keyboard shortcuts/modifier key doesn’t work.)

So this is yet another release where the screen reader is broken by default.

It’s amazing to me that this is not a showstopper.

I missed "Focus Follows Mouse" (a.k.a. "Sloppy Focus") from #Linux when using my work #macos laptop. Then discovered this marvel - AutoRaise - which does the same thing. 😍

If you want to move people to another operating system, then create the operating system so easy that even the dumbest person on the planet is able to use it.
Like me for example.

I have no single idea why my Linux systems on my desktop and laptop constantly commit suicide.
I treat my windows such as the Linux systems equally and I'm surprised that I barely never had to kill my windows Systems but my Linux machines die constantly. I can't work like that.

I moved to #DigitalOcean because #Hetzner networking was super slow (Kbps slow). I was curious to if it was a me-thing or a Hetzner-thing. And I figured it out. It's a Hetzner VPS configuration thing.

This is how it looked with iperf3:

[ ID] Interval Transfer Bitrate
[ 5] 0.00-2.00 sec 259 KBytes 1.06 Mbits/sec
[ 5] 2.00-4.00 sec 198 KBytes 811 Kbits/sec
[ 5] 4.00-6.00 sec 185 KBytes 759 Kbits/sec
[ 5] 6.00-8.00 sec 332 KBytes 1.36 Mbits/sec
[ 5] 8.00-10.00 sec 233 KBytes 956 Kbits/sec

I added these to /etc/sysctl.cfg:

net.core.default_qdisc=fq
net.ipv4.tcp_congestion_control=bbr

Rebooted.

This is how it looks now:

[ ID] Interval Transfer Bitrate
[ 5] 0.00-2.00 sec 131 MBytes 549 Mbits/sec
[ 5] 2.00-4.00 sec 153 MBytes 641 Mbits/sec
[ 5] 4.00-6.00 sec 158 MBytes 664 Mbits/sec
[ 5] 6.00-8.00 sec 147 MBytes 618 Mbits/sec
[ 5] 8.00-10.00 sec 156 MBytes 654 Mbits/sec

I've been trying a few Linux distributions (openSUSE Tumbleweed, Fedora, Debian, Mint) and I noticed how freaking difficult it still is to install Wine and DXVK.

Come on! It's been how long? Most Windows refugees will want to install Wine. It should be as simple as:
1. install wine package
2. double click .exe file

No wonder people love Arch so much.
