Book extract reads: I took the keys out of my pocket, alert for any hint of movement from either side as I approached the steps. If the bastards were going to try to rush me, they could come from the garage yard or up from the basement steps, or around the corner, under the walnut parlour windows. Three to one wasn’t good odds if they trapped me on the steps.
Nothing happened. I got to the porch, opened up, got inside and relocked the door. By the time I switched off the alarm, my pulse was racing and I was breathing hard.
I forced myself to walk slowly as I made a circuit of the ground floor. I checked every window. All was secure, and the silent house was serene. When I returned to the oak parlour, I was breathing more evenly again.
I didn’t have long to wait before Rufus rang. I could hear him scowling.
‘No sign of the bastards anywhere, but Bill and Martha are fine. They’ve been watching some old musical. I told them to lock up, stay in and ring 999 if they see or hear anything.’
‘That sounds good to me.’
‘I’m going to ring the cops and see what they want us to do.’
‘Call me back and let me know. I’ll ring Ed Franklin and tell him everything’s okay here.
I put the handset down and went to find Nicki’s phone list to get Ed’s mobile number. Once I had it, I picked up the phone and began hitting buttons. I was halfway through the number when the confident dial tone went silent.

My neighbor has a white cypress tree in their yard. This time of year it is chockablock with cypress berries. Turns out the Telegraph Hill parrots love the berries. They visit in the morning!
