From all I’ve read over the last few days, the consensus seems to be:

- #Bluesky have got a lot of the UX right, but there are still a lot to do on the infrastructure side to create a truly decentralized social media.
- #Mastodon / #Fediverse have come further in terms of building the underlying, decentralized infra, but are lagging behind when it comes to UX.

From what I’ve learned over the years, neither UX or infra are easy to fix down the road. But infra somewhat harder than UX.

Also—and I really don’t want to sound like a BlueskyBro here—is there any software that implements custom timelines in the Fediverse, such as the super cool ones Bluesky has?

It would be super cool if lists could be made not only of profiles, but also of hashtags and keywords, ideally even having custom algorithms, too!

🦋 #Bluesky now has over 20 Million user registrations!

Take a look at how the US #election impacted them:

"Es kann eben nicht ausgeschlossen werden, dass Elon Musk morgen #BlueSky kauft. Aber das Mastodon-Netzwerk kann niemand kaufen."

🆕 blog! “An Easy Guide To BlueSky Verification”

The new Twitter-Wannabe BlueSky has an interesting approach to verifying accounts. Rather than you sending in your passport, or paying a 3rd party, or bribing an employee - you can self-verify for free! This opens up verification to small organisations, individuals, and anyone who wants to prove who they are. Brillian…

Trying out #Bluesky feeling like McCauley in "Heat":

"Don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner"

:blobcatreading: I see so many posts lamenting the fact that people are moving from Twitter to Bluesky instead of Mastodon, but I think that’s a fundamental misunderstanding of the Fediverse and what it stands for.

People who want ‘just another platform’ will not find what they’re looking for here because Mastodon is not one.

By comparing Mastodon to other platforms specifically competing for Twitter’s user-base, we are trying to make Mastodon something it’s not; a stage where people shout at the world.

That concept is so fundamentally opposed to the philosophy of Mastodon and the greater Fediverse that I struggle to even make the comparison.

Mastodon is a tool to form communities where genuine conversations are actually given a chance and where small corners of the internet can blossom into something truly wonderful.

I think that is something worth holding on to, even if it means some people decide to join Bluesky instead. :blobcatheart:

@pluralistic 's words on Bluesky and #enshittification are, to me, true.

These two paragraphs say everything about why I can't trust Bluesky to always have good intentions:

'But here's the thing: all those other platforms, the ones where I unwisely allowed myself to get locked in, where today I find myself trapped by the professional, personal and political costs of leaving them, they were all started by people who swore they'd never sell out. I know those people, the old blogger mafia who started the CMSes, social media services, and publishing platforms where I find myself trapped. I considered them friends (I still consider most of them friends), and I knew them well enough to believe that they really cared about their users.

They did care about their users. They just cared about other stuff, too, and, when push came to shove, they chose the worsening of their services as the lesser of two evils.'

@michaelcoyote I think keeping Mastodon as a main account and also building a community on BS that could be ported here if the enshitification of BS hits, might not be an awful idea. it might also be a way to educate people about the fediverse. #Mastodon #BlueSky

☝️THIS 🧵☝️ is exactly why I do not trust #BlueSky . This recent push of so many accounts joining at once and the INorganic feel of the movement, combined with the #MAGA money funding the platform and the #Crypto scammer who owns it...

It all just adds up to trouble down the road-- for all of us, on or off of BS

BlueSky's MAGA owners are making it seem like a "safe space" for Liberals now, but I am dead certain the plan is to use it to spread political disunity and disinformation down the road.

I am especially worried abt disunity beginning there & working its way across #SocialMedia . Republicans and MAGA only win when we do not unify and vote together. It's how they won in 2016, how they won this year, & how they plan to win in the future.

Trump did not make huge gains between 2020 & 2024. The problem was a lack of unity behind Harris.

If they can sow enough discontent on the Liberal side, then MAGA can walk in the door unchallenged.

A critical look at Bluesky: Despite claims of decentralization, the core infrastructure remains tightly controlled by Bluesky Social, PBC, a VC-funded, for-profit company. With a proprietary protocol (ATProto) developed solely in-house, the incentives lean toward control rather than true federation. For now, it's still better than ExTwitter, but don't mistake it for Mastodon's openness.

#Mastodon got a lift in sign ups also.

"Month over month, signups were also up by 27% with 90,000 newly registered accounts in November."

This account is one in those 90,000.

My #Bluesky is really blowing up at the moment. I think somebody added me to a "starter pack," I wonder who. The vibe over there is real nice.

However, Bluesky's main investor is called BLOCKCHAIN CAPITAL. Signs point to a speed run of all Twitter's worst mistakes, resulting in a burning heap of Web3 garbage within a few years.

So, upon mature reflection, I'm gonna stick with Mastodon and y'all nerds for the time being. ;-)

Your friendly reminder that the guy whose company just invested $millions into #Bluesky is a former business associate of ex-Breitbart boss #SteveBannon.

Fool me once...

If you find yourself wishing you could follow #Bluesky accounts without having to actually use it, try using an RSS reader.

They added RSS to each account a while ago and you can follow any public account that way.

@Laberpferd

The Nafo & Furry communities indeed seem to be mass migrating to #Bluesky!

"...social network effect in full blast" 😂 👍

@zvavybir

I feel the fact that #Bluesky is connected to Steve Bannon and Russian state media and cryptobros should be bigger news.

But it's not.

If you search "Bluesky" using a search engine like DuckDuckGo, you'll come across results like "Here's What To Know About Bluesky" (NBC) or "X users jump to Bluesky - but what is it and who owns it" (BBC). One would think the aforementioned connections would be relevant info in a piece like that.

The omission is glaring.

STOP #ENSHITIFICATION

Support #Mastodon!

I would like to use Bluesky. They’ve done a bunch of seriously interesting technical work on moderation and ranking that I truly admire, and I’ve got lots of friends there who really enjoy it.

But I’m not on Bluesky and I don’t have any plans to join it anytime soon. I wrote about this in 2023: I will never again devote my energies to building up an audience on a platform whose management can sever my relationship to that audience at will

Why am I here and not on #Bluesky or #Threads? Because here I am on my own instance, hosted in the EU, and not on a centralised service from the US (which both Bluesky and Threads are) where soon a Trump government is installed that can easily force both Bluesky and Threads to hand over full access to all my data (I am quite sure Musk is already offering the X/Twitter social graph to Trump). That's my personal risk calculation. Yours might be very different. And that's perfectly fine! 1/3

I guess one question I have, is there a way for people to opt-out their bridged accounts from a starter pack?

😬

#bluesky

See #bluesky popping type shit 🤔
You know it i like mastodon just as it . Like a large family chat group. Anyway if I add any more socials my ass never gonna leave my phone 😉 mastodon is bussin only fedi for me 👌🏾
#mastodon folks i love y'all ❤️

The #Fediverse is starting to feel like fall 2022, only instead of every other post being about #twitter it’s about #bluesky

Until those that I interact with here on the #Fediverse all leave for #Bluesky, I really don’t care how fast Bluesky is growing.

The people I follow and those that I have chance encounters with on the Fediverse are awesome.

Y’all keep on being you. This place is most excellent!

#Mastodon #GoToSocial

We’re getting it wrong when we tell folks that #Mastodon is just like “Old #Twitter”. If you want that, that’s #Bluesky. Mastodon is a different kind of place.

This is a more intimate community that discourages “influencing” because there’s no profit motive for eyeballs. The microblogging approach may look similar to Twitter but the way the communities form and conversations evolve is fundamentally different.

It’s no uptopia; we’ve got a shitload of work to do to make it safer.

#Fediverse

TIL it is possible to import your Twitter account posts to Bluesky. Post portability may be a winning argument for many.

Can a few people share their bridged usernames to try this out?

You can follow @bsky.brid.gy to get started.

(Unless your server's admin blocked the bridge.)

#bluesky #fediverse #StarterPack

Someone should make a "cool bridged fediverse accounts to follow" starter packs.

#bluesky #StarterPack

Ah, so if I want to follow someone from Bluesky, they have to first follow the Bridgy Fed account to opt in, I see.

techcrunch.com/2024/06/05/blue…

Oh well.

Interestingly, a switch to opt-out is being considered.

Alright, here's a proof of concept: A starter pack of bridged fediverse accounts you can follow on Bluesky.

go.bsky.app/C6UaMCs

Seems to be working?

I don't really intend to keep this updated, but feel free to borrow the idea!

#bluesky #fediverse #StarterPack

When #Bluesky enshittifies, everyone will either go back to #twitter or to a new corporate "alternative," because most people would rather die than go through the ordeal of picking an instance, apparently.

@pence

I find it utterly unfair that Bluesky is now booming, the press is talking about it a lot, while Mastodon _is_ decentralized, older, provides more features, and is based on standards. Why people keep rejecting these techs? Why the choice is rarely made in favor of simple, standard-based, open, community-driven solutions?

This isn’t my project but I think it is an interesting question. What makes these solutions appealing or not?

#mastodon #bluesky

As of now, #Bluesky doesn't support attempts to bridge edits of ActivityPub content.

That's all I need to know, to make me avoid Bluesky bridging.

I like to repeatedly edit for clarity and style, for writing practice. In fact, I recall #editing one of my posts ten times.

Mastodon itself has enough trouble pushing edits through. Especially of media and alt text, as I recently explained. I sure don't want to compound this problem with any Bluesky snags.
