Today I am stepping down from my role as the CEO of #Mastodon. Though this has been in the works for a while, I can't say I've fully processed how I feel about it. There is a bittersweet part to it, and I think I will miss it, but it also felt necessary. It feels like a goodbye, but it isn't—I intend to stay on and continue to advise the new leadership and contribute, because Mastodon—and the fediverse—is one of the very few beacons of hope for a better web.

Today’s Gaza Verified verification calls are proceeding without any technical difficulties for once (I’ve jinxed it now, haven’t I?) so I’ve found myself with a nice ten-minute break between calls and what better use of the time than to toot about it? :P

@joynewacc and I have already verified two new members and will hopefully be verifying two more before the hour is done. (I say Joy and I… she’s the one doing all the work, really. I’m just there waving and smiling.) :)

Are there any user documentations on how the hashtag bar works? I.e. how placing hashtags at the end of a posts create an expandable bar at the end of the post and also how hashtags with certain characters like #å in #blåhaj will normalized to ascii and placed there.

The #JoinMastodon doc on docs.joinmastodon.org/user/pos… doesn't mention this.

When I got the idea to start my own Mastodon server in October 2022, many people asked, "What will happen to your server when you die? Will it just disappear? Aren't you afraid you'll lose all your data forever?"

Well, yes. No shit, Sherlock. But it'll be mine while I’m alive.

Websites come and go over the decades. Nothing is permanent. So why should a Mastodon server be any different?

Epicurus once said: Why should I fear death? If I am, then death is not. If death is, then I am not. Why should I fear that which can only exist when I do not?

While I embrace the mindset of focusing on the present, I do everything I can to keep this server running for as long as I live and breathe - and maybe even beyond.

A suggestion for Mastodon to use relative URLs and UUIDs for assets (images, etc.) in profiles and posts instead of linking directly to object storage.

This would:

• Simplify things for third-party apps and simplify the API (if implemented for assets in profiles)

• Help in migrations (if implemented for assets in posts)

• Make it possible to switch object storage backends without losing all assets (eg., move away from AWS)

Now that #Mastodon supports quotes, there are three important points to know with #Fedilab

- You can change the default privacy for quoting your messages in Settings>Profile (default anyone can quote you)

- You can customize this privacy for each message (when composing)

- If you don't see the merged Boost/Quote button, make sure that you didn't disable it in Settings > Timelines
