The Silent Hour (2024)

Tense suspenseful thriller set in a confined space. The pacing and editing are sharp and unrelenting. Great cast. Joel Kinnaman and Sandra Mae Frank are fantastic. They were even able to squeeze in a pretty touching scene. It is a lean film at just a few minutes over 90 minutes. An enjoyable movie, recommended.

Rated 7 out of 10.

High Heat (2022)

This movie tries to emulated Guy Ritchie. The look and feel doesn't work. It's charaters try to mimic the off kilter irrelevant charaacters of Ritchie films, but it doesn't work. The dialogue tries real hard to be Ritchiesque, but never comes close. Categorized as action comedy, but wasn't funny.

Rated 4 out of 10.

Two for Olga. One for action (not too bad), Gary the masseuse, the twins and celery beat down. One for the short runtime.

Streamed on Hulu.

Chief of Station (2025)

Lots of things happened. Characters spent many words telling each other what was happening. Yet, I have no clue what happened or why. I came for an action film, but endured 45 minutes of talk before bullets started flying.

If you come to see Olga Kurylenko, you'll be disappointed that she doesn't show up until more than half the movie is done.

The bad guy was immediately obvious as the film opened.

This is as generic as spy films get.

Rated 1 out of 10.

It's like Die Hard, but without Bruce Willis or Alan Rickman.

Though, at 90 something minutes, I may check this one out when it gets cheap enough to rent.

Tonight's movie is Chief of Station (2024). A random pick on Hulu with three criteria:

1) Around 90 minutes (this one clocks in at 93 minutes).
2) Some recognizable faces (Aaron Eckhart, Olga Kurylenko).
3) Action flick.

All boxes checked. Lets see how it goes.

Kraven the Hunter (2024) wasn't as bad as critics made it out to be. But it's also not good either. I wrote more about it here:

The Electric State (2025)

The reported budget for this movie was $320 million, making it the most expensive movie ever made. This movie does look good, but it does not feel like $320 million went into it.

How old is Millie Bobby Brown's character supposed to be? Are we still casting 20 year olds into teenager roles?

Hey look, it's Chris Pratt playing the same character he's been playing for years now.

This movie was merely meh.

Rated 2 out of 10.

I'm watching The Electric State and it's really not that great.

I started to think about the movie's directors, The Russo Brothers and their non-MCU directorial work.

It turns out their work outside of the MCU has been pretty dismal. Leaving me to wonder if their MCU work was good not because of them, but because of the heavy-handed control that Disney/Marvel exerts on the MCU movies.

Thoughts?

Today's movie...

Snow White (2025)

Live action remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which comes off as a well staged filmed play.

We meet Snow White as a princess, in a happy kingdom, with her mother and father. The mother becomes ill and passes away. Her father is later enchanted by a mysterious, magical, and beautiful woman, whom he marries. His new wife convinces the King to go away and defend the kingdom, leading him to never be heard from again. The new wife becomes an evil queen, and the once happy kingdom turns dark and depressing, while the people struggle.

It's a magical, beautifully filmed, feel good story. While I'm not a big fan of musicals, I enjoyed this film.

Will likely receive nominations for set design, costume, and music.

Directed by Marc Webb

Stars: Rachel Zegler, Andrew Burnap, and Gal Gadot

Happy first #LetterboxdFriday of spring!

It's been a slow start to #buff2025 so far. But that's okay, three days chalk full of features and shorts remain!

Fréwaka is easily the best so far, but is just missing a little something throughout. And it doesn't quite stick the landing, so I couldn't justify an extra half-star. But it's still quite good, and suitably creepy.

Danny Glover is perfectly cast in Francis Ford Coppola's 1997 film The Rainmaker in the uncredited role of Judge Tyrone Kipler.

He doesn't have too much screen time, but he makes a lasting impression and imbues the character with so much through just his actions.

This movie is well worth a watch if you haven't seen it before.

Alien (1979) is 46 years old and it looks so good. It is a beautifully shot horror film with some of the most visceral production design ever put on film.

H.R. Giger's beautiful design of the Xenomorph is as timeless as it is terrifying.

The facehugger and chestburster are horrifying.

It looks silly yet entertaining. The story, at least what is shown in the trailer looks a bit standard fare.

But really, im not going to be watching for the story. I’m going to be watching for the visuals. If the story turns out to be deep, it’ll be a nice extra.

I’m looking forward to seeing the F1 movie on the big screen.

Fast Charlie (2023)

The story is standard fare without much accoutrements, but the two leads make it work. Pierce Brosnan is as charming as ever. Morena Baccarin is also great. Brosnan pulls off some of the lines with a wry sense of humor that was entertaining.

There are bursts of violence scattered throughout a dialogue heavy movie -- with some really great lines performed with spotty Southern accents.

This was an entertaining movie.

Don't Move (2024)

I was paralyzed by the lack of logic, thrill and characterization. Oh, and the movie is boring too.

The score is not only overbearing, but very distracting. The directors should trust in the power of silence by practicing restraint when it comes to the score.

No one in the film acts like an actual human.

Kelsey Asbille is fantastic in the film, given that she's mostly paralyzed. Finn Wittrock has such a punchable face in the movie.
