It should matter that one of Bluesky's investors is Alumni Ventures, which also funded Outlogic (formerly known as X-Mode Social) - basically a data broker that collected and sold location data by tracking various mobile apps (including dating, music, weather, and Muslim prayer apps.)
Among other controversies, Outlogic/X‑Mode had supplied location data to U.S. military contractors:

Something a little different for this week’s article - a guide to the Twitter/X exodus from a disability and chronic illness point of view.
People are leaving the site in droves - whether because of changing privacy and data policies or in protest of Musk and Trump’s increasingly fascist and problematic behaviour.
What happens to the disability community who’ve long relied on that app for support, friendship and connection? People who are sick can’t migrate to a new platform as easily as their non-disabled counterparts.
How can we help people find community elsewhere? How can we ensure the transition takes as few spoons as possible?
Most importantly - how can we ensure no one gets left behind?

The newest post from @tomgauld.bsky.social was shared ~600 times on #Bluesky. But thanks to @bsky.brid.gy it was also shared 250 times on #Mastodon.
(But because most of the accounts here aren't bridged, #TomGauld doesn't even know about this.)
As an idealist #activitypub should be enough for all federated apps out there.
The reality: We're building bridges to #bluesky and Pixelfed would like to implement two protocols for one app.
We gained nothing if developers implementing multiple protocols to be federated.
Can we please agree on a decentralised protocol? Thanks!

Jack Dorsey completely left the board of Bluesky on May 2024 and cut all ties with Bluesky. I think he has no shares either, can't confirm it though. However, if he "lost all interest" like he said, I wonder why he'd want to have any shares of it. Dorsey's main focus is in Nostr.

November has sucked so far. One upside of the terrible nonsense is that more people are fleeing X. Many are choosing Bluesky. I’ve seen a bunch of takes about this recently, but I keep seeing things I disagree with.Gavin Anderegg

on a decentralized network, all the posts have to be pulled together (and managed somewhat) for you somewhere.
#bluesky / #ATproto does it with the relay they control. #ActivityPub / #mastodon does it via the server your account is on. #nostr lets you use multiple relays but then your client also does some of it afaik.
the question seems to be how much of that work do people want to do themselves vs sharing the cost and time involved. what are the tradeoffs in freedom and control? #SocialWeb

For some reason people fleeing the sinking #Twitter / #X ship for #BlueSky don't seem to be aware of the fact that crypto bros at #BlockchainCapital bought a huge stake in the company just a few weeks ago. Like these are basically the same crypto bros who just helped #ElonMusk buy Twitter. They might even be literally the same people (I strongly suspect they are but I'm too lazy to check). Either way #BlockchainCapital was co-founded by #BrockPierce, who also brought you #Tether, AKA the company that Trump's transition team chairman manages $120 billion for. Pierce is also a friend of the #Netanyahu family.
You don't have to take my word for it. Here's the official press release: bsky.social/about/blog/10-24-2…
Moving to BlueSky is not an escape. Growing a base there is just putting in a bunch of work to create a platform that will be co-opted by crypto bros as soon as X breaks in half.

The exodus from X to Bluesky has happened – the era of mass social media platforms is over
There’s comfort in being surrounded by like-minded people, but challenge is important, and we may have to look for it elsewhere, says Guardian columnist Gaby HinsliffGaby Hinsliff (The Guardian)
IMHO: #BlueSky isn't decentralised or federated. The outage on 2024-11-14 is obvious proof. It may *look* decentralised and they definitely love to outsource traffic/storage costs by claiming that running your own PDS (Personal Data Server) is somehow something federated, but that's all smoke and mirrors. You have to go deep on [1] to find "networking through Relays instead of server-to-server" as their current implementation choice. THEY run the relays. No one else.

Disappointed #X users are going to #Bluesky instead of #Mastodon
People like what is closest to what they are already using. #Mastodon is laid gratuitously different in terms of buttons to push and links to click. People who left #Twitter earlier didn't like that and left.
The crowds are different.
The prime content providers are staying on #X. Some are going to #BlueSky. Some are reposting here with #bots
Then there is the ridiculous size limit on toots on many servers
But I’m not on Bluesky and I don’t have any plans to join it anytime soon. I wrote about this in 2023: I will never again devote my energies to building up an audience on a platform whose management can sever my relationship to that audience at will."

For really no reason at all 😇 here's why I find the user experience on #Mastodon better than in that Nazi Chatroom when it was still called "Twitter":
- 500+ characters
- post editing
- follow hashtags
- better s/n ratio
- no ads
Plus, quintsns.pianeta.uno/ does a pretty good job at replacing paper.li
So I wouldn't go back, even if someone resurrected Twitter. Now, FriendFeed on the other hand... 😆

For two weeks in a row, #Mastodon brought more #traffic than #X / #Twitter to heise.de.
But I forgot, that's not just via @heiseonline, but also @heisec, @ct_Magazin, @heiseautos, @iX_Magazin etc. (but for Twitter its the same).
#Bluesky is way behind, #Threads even more. Only Twitter is clearly falling.
