Three spam posts from mastodon.social in two days. Sigh. #spam #mastodon

pluralistic.net/2024/11/02/uly…

@pluralistic 's words on Bluesky and #enshittification are, to me, true.

These two paragraphs say everything about why I can't trust Bluesky to always have good intentions:

'But here's the thing: all those other platforms, the ones where I unwisely allowed myself to get locked in, where today I find myself trapped by the professional, personal and political costs of leaving them, they were all started by people who swore they'd never sell out. I know those people, the old blogger mafia who started the CMSes, social media services, and publishing platforms where I find myself trapped. I considered them friends (I still consider most of them friends), and I knew them well enough to believe that they really cared about their users.

They did care about their users. They just cared about other stuff, too, and, when push came to shove, they chose the worsening of their services as the lesser of two evils.'

Très heureux de rejoindre ce réseau ! Un peu d'oxygène numérique.

@michaelcoyote I think keeping Mastodon as a main account and also building a community on BS that could be ported here if the enshitification of BS hits, might not be an awful idea. it might also be a way to educate people about the fediverse. #Mastodon #BlueSky

On Mastodon, you never see all replies, especially if you host a small instance.

GoToSocial and IceShrimp.NET do a fetch all replies when you open the detail of a post.

This feature may finally be on its way to Mastodon!

Hoping it gets a UI indicator showing the reply retrieval progress. Right now, that is lacking in other software, you have to refresh the screen after a bit of time has passed and then see them, not ideal.

I love that the first command on the Mastodon "Using the admin CLI" documentation page is the ultimate kaboom command.

#mastodon #mastoadmin

Speaking of #MastoAdmin duties that I'm working on right now, I'm also setting up regular cleanup for my instance.

This is a powerful statement from UK journalists and we agree.

X is no longer neutral and no longer a home for journalists.

We are ready to support any and all journalists who make the move to open social networks, now and in the New Social future.

Please, feel free to send journalists or publications our way if they have any questions. Or, if you're a journalist yourself, feel free to reach out.

#Mastodon got a lift in sign ups also.

"Month over month, signups were also up by 27% with 90,000 newly registered accounts in November."

This account is one in those 90,000.

A downside of fediverse (at the moment) is the wrongly displayed amount of likes/shares (boosts) of a post.

When you want to double check it, click the three dots underneath the post and select 'open in original page'.

It can result in a post showing for example '3 boosts' on your instance into '280 boosts' on the original page.

TIL that some Mastodon servers require authentication even to get a public post by API.

Oh well, more error checking code it is, then :)

Coming soon… Streamiverse.

A curated streaming fediverse post API compatible with the Mastodon API for use in teaching, demos, presenting, etc. Basically, if you were using the Mastodon public timeline API for these use cases before it started to require authentication, this will be a good alternative :)

If you have suggestions for the curated feed, reply to this with links to posts.

While #Mastodon is the giant of the #Fediverse , I am curious if any of the other projects have made better strides with onboarding, moderation, UX and so forth.

How is #Friendica on these issues? Or #Misskey ? Ideally we should have a number of _different_ #ActivityPub -based systems which all compete to make their user experiences better. I mean, isn't tying ourselves too closely to any single platform how we got ourselves into this mess in the first place?

micromookie.com was one of my first #Mastodon instances that I brought up and ran -- way back in 2018.

Thank goodness for the @internetarchive. They preserved a bunch of the instance and I'm thankful for that.

STOP #ENSHITIFICATION

Support #Mastodon!

I would like to use Bluesky. They’ve done a bunch of seriously interesting technical work on moderation and ranking that I truly admire, and I’ve got lots of friends there who really enjoy it.

But I’m not on Bluesky and I don’t have any plans to join it anytime soon. I wrote about this in 2023: I will never again devote my energies to building up an audience on a platform whose management can sever my relationship to that audience at will

How much does it cost me to run this single-user #Mastodon instance annually?

$130 - VPS (4x vCPU, 16GB RAM, 200GB Storage, 10TB Transfer)
$12 - Domain
$0 - DNS
$0 - Email
$0 - Monitoring / Alerting
$0 - Observability

Total (Annual): $142
Per Month: $11.83

Not bad, it’s $4 less than #Netflix (without ads) per month. The #Fediverse way more amusing and fun when compared to Netflix.

Tiny Fediverse Tip to Organize ✊💚:

In the months to come,
it will become increasingly important to organize, and to organize outside of corporate-owned environments.

Here are a few tools you can use to organize through the Fediverse:

This afternoon, an acquaintance joined a Mastodon instance and asked me which "celebrities" are present in the Fediverse, as if it were important to determine the value of a social network based on that.

I told him that the most important user in the Fediverse is him. Just as it’s you, reading this. Someone who has decided to interact with others freely. Who has chosen to trust their administrator (or create their own instance) more than they trust those who run traditional, monolithic, centralized social networks.

So, I want to thank all the friends of BSD Cafe, whether local or not, for being here and making this place what it is. And I thank all my friends in the Fediverse, who make my timeline lively, interesting, intelligent, fun, and thought-provoking - every day, at any time.

See #bluesky popping type shit 🤔
You know it i like mastodon just as it . Like a large family chat group. Anyway if I add any more socials my ass never gonna leave my phone 😉 mastodon is bussin only fedi for me 👌🏾
#mastodon folks i love y'all ❤️

Notes on starter packs: what I like about Mastodon (and previously on Twitter to some extent). I like the community building as an active process. That is, discovering people by reading hashtags and interacting with them (or hoping to learn from them). This is an active process, which runs counter to the parasocial influencer stuff you get elsewhere. In this context, people are free to follow, but not free to expect interactions with me if they are not constructive.

#mastodon #socialmedia

Until those that I interact with here on the #Fediverse all leave for #Bluesky, I really don’t care how fast Bluesky is growing.

The people I follow and those that I have chance encounters with on the Fediverse are awesome.

Y’all keep on being you. This place is most excellent!

#Mastodon #GoToSocial

We’re getting it wrong when we tell folks that #Mastodon is just like “Old #Twitter”. If you want that, that’s #Bluesky. Mastodon is a different kind of place.

This is a more intimate community that discourages “influencing” because there’s no profit motive for eyeballs. The microblogging approach may look similar to Twitter but the way the communities form and conversations evolve is fundamentally different.

It’s no uptopia; we’ve got a shitload of work to do to make it safer.

#Fediverse

Reminder that you can post about #Mastodon / #Fediverse on sites like Twitter, using the hashtags people are using to criticize them. I go there sometimes and talk about how we aren't owned by a crazy billionaire and how blocking actually works here.

How do I increase the character limit for a #Mastodon server hosted via @cloudron? #selfhosted

I find it utterly unfair that Bluesky is now booming, the press is talking about it a lot, while Mastodon _is_ decentralized, older, provides more features, and is based on standards. Why people keep rejecting these techs? Why the choice is rarely made in favor of simple, standard-based, open, community-driven solutions?

This isn’t my project but I think it is an interesting question. What makes these solutions appealing or not?
