Yay, thanks to @jan being lovely and not shying away from the headache of hosting a forked Mastodon, my instance how has an increased character limit.
This was one of my main bugbears and is going to improve my life. Not having to freaking edit something to squeeze in that one extra character? Yes, please.

Today, I had a meeting with someone who works for the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology in India. He was at some UN forum recently where they were discussing the carbon footprint of the internet and he mentioned that there's very little data on this. Well guess what, here on #mastodon I've been following the work of @Aepasek and I immediately ended up sharing her research with him, especially this paper on The world wide web of carbon: Toward a relational footprinting of information and communications technologyβs climate impacts. Thank you Anne for your research on this!
He was grateful and exited to look into this further! And now I'm trying to see if he'd be interested in collaborating with us on our digitization project. It's a long shot, but worth a try.. he said he'll get back to me by next week. Let's see if that happens π

You might say; yes but mstdn.social is based in the Netherlands with servers in Europe, while #Bluesky is a US company with its servers in the the US. It's not the same thing. And, the answer is that you are exactly right.
On the day after the election @Gargron posted (mastodon.social/@Gargron/11343β¦): "I think it's going to be more important than ever that #Mastodon and the #fediverse are not centrally operated out of the US unlike almost every other social media platform out there."

My survey asked what your favorite search engine is.
51% said DuckDuckGo, 12% Startpage, 9% Ecosia and 4% Qwant. Only 6% said Google and 1% Bing. 17% said they preferred another search engine, with many mentioning Kagi and Mojeek.
This is quite different from what the market share out there is, which shows how unique you all are here in the Fediverse. You make your own choices and do not follow everyone else. Be proud.

Damn, @mammoth is shutting down the app and their moth.social server. Super bummed to see this. Mammoth was one of the first big Mastodon projects I saw when I joined for real back in 2021.
I was even on the original TestFlight with the old icon! It kind of indirectly sparked my first attempt at @mastowatch
According to Mastowatch, almost 8,000 people will be looking for a new home π§

Which #mastodon instance would you recommend to host the institutional account for an interdisciplinary academic department in the UK?
scholar.social would be great, but it's not admitting more users. Other alternatives I've considered: sciences.social/ (although not all of us are social scientists), h-net.social (not all of us from humanities) or datasci.social (not all of us are data scientists)

I had #Elasticsearch running on a spare VPS for testing full-text search on #Mastodon. The functionality is pretty awesome and useful.
I have consolidated and moved Elasticsearch onto the VPS running shumai.xyz -- there's 16GB of RAM on this VPS, so I have memory to spare. I am not too worried about any performance hit since this is just a single-user instance.
