I find it utterly unfair that Bluesky is now booming, the press is talking about it a lot, while Mastodon _is_ decentralized, older, provides more features, and is based on standards. Why people keep rejecting these techs? Why the choice is rarely made in favor of simple, standard-based, open, community-driven solutions?
This isn’t my project but I think it is an interesting question. What makes these solutions appealing or not?
Being responsible and careful is a necessity when you carry 70% of installed software by user count.
If we roughly implement things or release stuff without properly testing it and finding rough edges, we risk breaking or making worse, the Fediverse experience for 70% of all its users — that's a huge responsibility.
Trust and safety *must* be considered, protocol design and interoperability with other software is a must, not a nice to have.
We need to lead which sometimes results in needing to slow down feature development to ensure all aspects are considered.
Yes, sometimes big regressions make it in, but they're usually something to be avoided at all costs, and we prioritise fixing a bunch of bugs & performance issues.
And yes, there's our own internal issues with how we work that slows us down, but there's a lot of work going into improving that situation too.

Just a reminder: everything you do on social media is public. Even if you delete a post on your instance, it can still exist on other instances, in the cache of search engines or private databases.
Bahaha, I just realised the red box I'm seeing around lots of images is custom CSS for shaming people who don't add alt-text to their images. Mildly annoying, but worth it.
Tidy play, FediScience @admin! Other instances should pick up this practice.

Good point. Mastodon's Lists feature could evolve by including two options:
- Lists are currently private. There should be an option to make them public / sharable via a URL.
- Everyone should get an opt-in option in their Privacy settings to say "Allow my profile to be listed on Public lists"
That way it doesn't break the existing list functionality, but also allows people to not be included to lists that can be shared.
Of course, there is already a very active thread on Public / Sharable lists on the Mastodon GitHub:

Yes. But we don't need to call them "starter packs" - they're just public lists.
Twitter had that too, you could see 1) which lists you're on and 2) which lists someone is following (as long as they were public) and you could follow them. Great feature that is unfortunately absent on #Mastodon simply because the lists are private.
So, this is cool 👇
The newest post from @tomgauld.bsky.social was shared ~600 times on #Bluesky. But thanks to @bsky.brid.gy it was also shared 250 times on #Mastodon.
(But because most of the accounts here aren't bridged, #TomGauld doesn't even know about this.)

There appears to be a bug in the user icons displayed in the web version of mastodon v4.3.1 on the notifications page. The same user icon can show up multiple times.
This has happened on many of my posts for the past few days.

"I can't be an influencer on Mastodon" is a feature, not a bug.

on a decentralized network, all the posts have to be pulled together (and managed somewhat) for you somewhere.
#bluesky / #ATproto does it with the relay they control. #ActivityPub / #mastodon does it via the server your account is on. #nostr lets you use multiple relays but then your client also does some of it afaik.
the question seems to be how much of that work do people want to do themselves vs sharing the cost and time involved. what are the tradeoffs in freedom and control? #SocialWeb
This world can often make living in it so difficult
A world
that worships the privileged
Condemns the poor
Defends injustice
Stokes hatred
Thinks that weakness cannot also be strength
Doesn't want to give hope to the hopeless
and often I see that it just doesn't get better, despite so many efforts and good people
I really can't understand it sometimes

Disappointed #X users are going to #Bluesky instead of #Mastodon
People like what is closest to what they are already using. #Mastodon is laid gratuitously different in terms of buttons to push and links to click. People who left #Twitter earlier didn't like that and left.
The crowds are different.
The prime content providers are staying on #X. Some are going to #BlueSky. Some are reposting here with #bots
Then there is the ridiculous size limit on toots on many servers
Oh happy day! Not only is it Friday, one of the nicest days of the week, it’s also Vivaldi Social’s birthday. 🎉 We’ve now been on Mastodon for two wholesome years.
We choose to do things that make your experience on the web better and we wholeheartedly believe that Vivaldi Social does just that. We want to provide a platform where people can join in on the smart, funny, and empathetic conversations taking place all over the Fediverse.
The only thing we wish for our two-year birthday is for more people to experience the power of the Fediverse, so make sure you tell a friend about Vivaldi Social today!
Here’s to many more years!
With love,
Team Vivaldi
