👆 #Bluesky has starter packs to help people find interesting accounts. I built one with accounts from #Mastodon, that can be followed from there (thx @bsky.brid.gy).
But it was challenging to find more, that aren't already also active there. Any suggestions, whom I could add?
Because let's build more bridges!

New: A Conceptual Model of ATProto and ActivityPub
You might want to know a little bit more about how #Bluesky and #atproto works, without needing to know all the technical details. This is a high level overview of how to think about how atproto works, and how it differs from #ActivityPub.
It is also a reflection on the concepts of decentralisation and federation, and what they bring to both the #fediverse and the #atmosphere

A conceptual model of ATProto and ActivityPub
If you were to design an open social networking protocol, what would that look like? Which metaphors and comparisons would you use to get a general idea of how the network functions? And what would you answer if people ask if your network is decentra…fediversereport.com
Interesting observation: One of the conclusions of my #ChangingHowWeChoose book is that one key to successful moral social communities is groups that provide easy and low-cost group switching. @pluralistic points out that this is the key to #mastodon 's success over #BlueSky and #xitter
Basically, the logic from the book is the following: Because the fundamental pro-social conflict is between individual goals and group goals, groups with cooperative communities (due to their social codes that align these goals) outperform groups without. If we have the opportunity to switch groups, cooperative people will migrate to cooperative groups, do better than the selfish, and the overall prosocial moral structure will improve.
In pluralistic.net/2024/11/02/uly…, @pluralistic suggests that this also reduces #enshittification .
Fascinating!
Great piece on BlueSky and enshittification by @pluralistic. “I will never again devote my energies to building up an audience on a platform whose management can sever my relationship to that audience at will.”

Cory Doctorow @pluralistic putting into words maybe one of the fears I have for #RStats folk - they'll get locked in.
Easy to get in. But can you get out again. For me it's not really anything #Bluesky itself is/isn't doing...but what's gone before. People have poured their time and content for free into other platforms then been stung by policy/service changes. 1/2
> #Bluesky lacks the one federated feature that is absolutely necessary for me to trust it: the ability to leave Bluesky and go to another host and continue to talk to the people I've entered into community with there.
Y'ALL KNOW #COPILOT IS BULLSHIT, RIGHT?
you do not invest 13 BILLION IN EQUITY nor gift some scripty kids another $2 billion, give or take, so you can have your own separate and much inferior #AI product, right?!?!?!

One of my favorite people is now on blue sky, and I dont want to create a bluesky account just to follow him.
Fortunately every blue sky account has an rss feed, and RSSParrot can create a fediverse account for me to follow so I can get my favorite twitch streamer's bluesky updates right in my mastodon timeline: rss-parrot.net/

This does not change the fact that the Bluesky app and the AT Protocol do not use #blockchains or #cryptocurrency, and we will not hyperfinancialize the #social experience (through #tokens, crypto #trading, #NFTs, etc.).
But taking #money from this swamp is OK? What's the color of money 💵 - don't tell me that it is green cause I know it's red. Dancing with the devil won't change the devil but you.

This is why I have been trying to warn about #BlueSky.
BlueSky has just been partially bought by a cryptocurrency company "Blockchain Capital" and appointed a blockchain / cryptocurrency expert to their board:
bsky.social/about/blog/10-24-2…
The board member is a bitcoin researcher involved with NFT analytics.
BlueSky describe the tie-up with Blockchain Capital as a "natural partnership" and says the blockchain company has "a uniquely deep understanding of our decentralized foundation".

#Bluesky just announced that they raised 13 million from a company called *checks notes* Blockchain Capital. They are pinky promising not to use blockchains and cryptocurrency in Bluesky. They also took the chance to announce that they are working in a subscription model but they also mentioned they will not uprank paid accounts.
#ActivityPub is feeling really cozy today don't you think. bsky.social/about/blog/10-24-2…

“our lead shares our philosophy that technology should serve the user, not the reverse
this is why they focus on blockchains, a technology basically always used at the expense of its users”
i do think the degree to which bluesky is stressing that they do not use blockchains really underscores how toxic even a faint whiff of blockchain has become to any normal platform
