Something a little different for this week’s article - a guide to the Twitter/X exodus from a disability and chronic illness point of view.
People are leaving the site in droves - whether because of changing privacy and data policies or in protest of Musk and Trump’s increasingly fascist and problematic behaviour.
What happens to the disability community who’ve long relied on that app for support, friendship and connection? People who are sick can’t migrate to a new platform as easily as their non-disabled counterparts.
How can we help people find community elsewhere? How can we ensure the transition takes as few spoons as possible?
Most importantly - how can we ensure no one gets left behind?

The Xitter Exodus and What it Means for the Disability Community
Disabled and chronically ill people have long used Twitter/X for community, fundraising, companionship and support. With folks leaving in droves - where will we go and how can we stick together?Broadwaybabyto (The Disabled Ginger)
I feel conflicted about this. I have spent a lot of time and effort in the #fediverse since I left Xitter over a year ago. There are things I *love* about it. I love the open source foundation, the fact that it is distributed, and that it is not dependent on big corps.
But it's hard being Black here, and 99% the people in my most important communities are just not here.
I had a small instance, which I will be turning off in a month. It wasn't worth the cost or effort.

Oh happy day! Not only is it Friday, one of the nicest days of the week, it’s also Vivaldi Social’s birthday. 🎉 We’ve now been on Mastodon for two wholesome years.
We choose to do things that make your experience on the web better and we wholeheartedly believe that Vivaldi Social does just that. We want to provide a platform where people can join in on the smart, funny, and empathetic conversations taking place all over the Fediverse.
The only thing we wish for our two-year birthday is for more people to experience the power of the Fediverse, so make sure you tell a friend about Vivaldi Social today!
Here’s to many more years!
With love,
Team Vivaldi

I've just shared my story on why I've left other social media for the Fediverse at the Guardian.

Perhaps more people could tell them about this place? Maybe some of it will be published allowing more people to discover the Fediverse.

A beginner's guide to Mastodon, the open source Twitter alternative | TechCrunch
Mastodon has almost doubled its userbase since Elon Musk took control of Twitter last month. Here's what you need to know about the platform.Amanda Silberling (TechCrunch)
"A nonprofit continuing to post to X is not only unwelcome by the crowd growing there, but they are complicit in what is to come.
That's why 62% of nonprofits active on X have already begun building a presence on new and emerging platforms."
Read about why @saskia doesn't think nonprofits should be sticking to X in her latest blog post.

X makes you complicit, it's time for nonprofits to act
Why remain on a platform that directly opposes your organisations morals? I'll start by admitting that I am angry. The thread that weaves between the lines of this blog is red and spiteful.Saskia (FORbetter)

I guess it is not a surprise. Most of you think that social media platforms that utilize algorithmic feeds are inherently anti-free-speech. So do I.
You have made the choice to join Mastodon, where the content you see is chronological and not decided by algorithms. IMHO, you have made the right choice.
I remember a time when we all viewed the Web with optimism. The more people we could get to join, the better for the world. Now it is a bit more mixed, but IMHO social media companies that utilize algorithmic feeds are to blame. We can move towards a better Web together by getting more people to join us.

We're helping important organisations move away from Big Tech platforms and towards open New Social platforms - like Mastodon!
But, we can't do it alone. We'd love to hear which organisations you think should make the move and why, so we can show them that there is a community waiting here for them.
Better yet, if you have a connection to an important organisation, we'd love to be introduced!
