Israel's Lavender: What could go wrong when AI is used in military operations?
In this episode of GZERO AI, Taylor Owen, professor at the Max Bell School of Public Policy at McGill University and director of its Centre for Media, Technology & Democracy, examines the Israeli Defence Forces' use of an AI system called Lavender to…Taylor Owen (GZERO Media)
“Israel is killing people based on being in the same Whatsapp group as a suspected militant. Where are they getting this data? Is WhatsApp sharing it?”

I feel we have to make this relevant to USians given how low the exchange rate of Palestinian lives to the US Dollar is: Think of it this way, this probably means your credit score is also affected by the people in your WhatsApp groups.
(So, do we finally have your attention?)🤞

A little-discussed detail in the Lavender AI article is that Israel is killing people based on being in the same Whatsapp group [1] as a suspected militant [2].Paul Biggar
Meta is allegedly sharing Whatsapp data to the IDF.

I said it elsewhere, but I say it here too, I HATE how corporate social media sites have taken SOCIAL out of social media.
Thankfully the Fediverse is mostly taking that back. But if we don't expand to get those that are still on corporate social media to move here, then we'll just become the echo chambers we hate. That's why the Threads integration is a good thing. We need to expand.

Last month, Meta's Threads took its first step into the fediverse. @quillmatiq@mastodon.social, aka @quillmatiq@threads.net took that as his cue to experiment with how his Threads feed would look like on Mastodon. Here's what he discovered about organizing the chaos, different clients (hello @phanpy) and whether he'll cut the Threads cord when federation is complete.

Threads on Mastodon and The Bright Future of the Fediverse
This is my journey that started as an experiment to see how my Threads feed would look like on Mastodon and ended with me finding experiences that went above and beyond my expectations.Anuj Ahooja (augment)
I’m seeing a lot of people badmouthing Facebook/Meta and saying we shouldn’t federate with Threads.
Mastodon.social is owned by Mastodon gGmbH and run by the *author* of Mastodon. Mastodon.social federates with Threads. If Facebook/Meta were toxic, do you think they would? Of course, not.
Facebook/Meta has Mastodon’s author’s (& the original Mastodon server’s) seal of approval. So you should all shush because clearly you’re mistaken.

would dot social bend the knee in that scenario and change their policy? probably

Wondering how many publications are going to hesitate to print criticism of #meta, now that Facebook has shown they'll make an offending outlet invisible with a snap of their fingers.
Remind me how federating with Threads is good for openness, again?

Adam Mosseri (mosseri@mastodon.social), who works at #Meta on #Threads, is looking to fix a bug that affects how images on Threads render on some #Fediverse servers.
He also confirms that our comments on Threads posts will be visible to Threads users soon, meaning “true” two-way federation is coming.

Report: OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, and Meta Stole Content at Scale to Train AI
"...OpenAI in 2021 created a speech recognition tool called Whisper that could transcribe the audio in YouTube videos to create text for training its ChatGPT AI. It did so despite the opposition of employees who argued that Whisper violated YouTube’s rules. And it did so at scale, creating over one million hours of YouTube video transcripts."

“The Kansas Reflector published an artical about Meta censoring environmental articles about climate change — deeming them ‘too controversial’.
Facebook then censored the article about Facebook censorship, and then after an independent site published a copy of the climate change article, Facebook censored it too.”

Anyone replying to this with offensive tone will be blocked. I dont follow you Aral and wont ever do, Im not interested in any of the issue you comment about. Im commenting beacuse I follow the #Threads and I have seen countless of user offering cyber abuse towards Gargon.
If you’re on mastodon.social, I would highly recommend that you switch to a different server that protects its people instead of exposing them to a well-known bad actor like Facebook/Meta via Threads.
For alternatives, see: https://fedipact.veganism.social
And remember that Mastodon is not the fediverse. The fediverse is much more than just Mastodon and definitely more so than mastodon.social and Mastodon gGmbH.

De-federating #Threads does NOT prevent #Meta from accessing your public #Fediverse feed.
This is demonstrably false. Almost all servers that de-federate Threads still broadcast the RSS feed of your posts. This is available to everyone, even servers that are de-federated from yours.
If you don’t believe me, test this out for yourself. Append “.rss” to the end of your profile URL (exampleserver.com/@username.rss), and see what happens.
Hell, if I wanted to build a search engine for the Fediverse and not use ActivityPub, I could use RSS instead and I could index most of the Fediverse – whether you opt into it or not.
Let’s stop spreading the myth that de-federation by itself prevents Threads from accessing your public feed.

@fabio @Rik_Dhuyvetters @eatyourglory
Understood. But I feel that we who understand the issues have a moral duty not to help #Meta: not by feeding it information about ourselves, and not by doing anything it can use to increase its users' engagement with its platform.
If Meta's users can access Fedi from where they already are, they have less incentive to step outside and find an experience free of advertising, tracking and Meta's unhealthy mind games.
@fabio @Rik_Dhuyvetters @eatyourglory
We can't wait for people to move to Linux: we have to help them. I've managed to move two family members and one friend to #Linux. I've got maybe a dozen people regularly using #Signal because I refused to use #WhatsApp and wasn't afraid to explain why. I've migrated at least three people from #Chrome to #Firefox.
IMHO, allowing Fedi to become a small curiosity on the outskirts of #Threads would be our death knell. We mustn't underestimate how evil #Meta is. They don't tolerate competition, they don't play fair, and they don't care how much damage they do as long as it makes money or entrenches their hegemony.
Everyone here knows the three E's: embrace, extend, extinguish. Are you ready to be embraced?
Meta (Facebook, Instagram, #Threads, etc.):
1. Doesn’t moderate anti-transgender hate on its platforms.
2. Secretly pays teenagers to use their VPN service so they can access all their web activity, gets busted, then uses same app to man-in-the-middle attack Snapchat users to get their encrypted data.
3. Lets Netflix see user DMs.

Old enough to remember when the official Mastodon site used to promote a diverse range of small instances, and made fun of Meta instead of collaborating with it.
This used to be on their front page, long gone now 😢
https://fedi.video/w/cbQE3NRw76FayQCSdb14TU
Instead, we now have a front page telling people to sign up on mastodon.social, an instance list that prioritises large instances, and a blog gushing over how wonderful it is to see Meta federating with them.
Greatly appreciate the work Eugen has done, but his current direction of travel is deeply worrying.

So apparently Meta/Facebook had an agreement with Netflix to let Netflix read Facebook users' private messages / DMs:

Can someone please tell me why we are allowing this kind of company to dominate the Fediverse? What is going on? Have admins lost leave of their senses? Why run a Fedi server if you're okay helping Meta?
