Finca La Carbonera

One response to the economic problems is to support the production of food within Cuba. One of my friends is following several ideas to do so, for example by improving the conditions and offering services for small-scale farmers.

Five causes for demise

In an earlier post (social.spejset.org/@skatan/115…), I promised to write more about the causes of the current economic crisis in Cuba. This thread is my attempt to summarize what I have learned from those I talked with and my own observations. It is by no means scientific, so please take it with a grain of salt. But while the people I talked in some cases disagreed in the importance of some of the causes, all agreed that all of them contributed.

A man digging through thrash in over-full containers in the streets of Centro Habana. During my visit this time I saw much more people going through thrash than last time (seven years ago).
Another man inspecting thrash. Thrash collection is also way less reliable than before, with many of the containers being badly damaged and garbage trucks passing by irregularly. In many cases, the street corners where the bins are placed get damaged and start to collect water and large amounts of garbage — perfect breeding ground for mosquitos, which forms part of the explanation of the current Chikungunya epidemic in Cuba.
