Snowshoe hares don’t turn white because it’s cold, but because of daylight.

Their seasonal molt is triggered by changes in photoperiod, not temperature, so early snowmelt or delayed snowfall can leave them mismatched with the landscape.

A snowshoe hare in its winter coat sits partially hidden among snow-covered ground and leafless twigs. The hare’s fur is thick and completely white, blending closely with the surrounding snow. Only its dark brown eye and the faint gray shading around its nose and ears stand out against the pale fur. One long ear is upright and sharply defined, edged with subtle gray tones.
