A slender pink-flowered spike of bog wintergreen rising against a dark, shadowed background. The nodding, cup-shaped flowers are deep pink with paler centers, arranged up a pale green stem, with unopened buds near the top. A second, softer-focus flowering stem and broad green leaves fill the lower left.

Liverleaf Wintergreen - Pyrola asarifolia - Alaska Wildflowers

The liverleaf wintergreen is a 10-20 cm tall plant with a raceme of pink, nodding flowers. It typically lives in forests or alpine meadows in moist soil.

Bright green curtains of aurora borealis fill most of a deep blue night sky, swirling and streaming diagonally from the upper left toward the horizon. The brightest band forms a sharp ribbon of vivid green edged with pink and magenta, folding back on itself like drapery, while fainter rays fan out to the right in soft vertical streaks. A few stars show through the glow. Along the bottom, a low ridge of snow-covered mountains catches faint light, and the dark silhouette of a rocky outcrop with a few spruce trees rises in the lower right corner. A thin band of pale purple twilight lingers just above the mountains.
