Many Americans say U.S. democracy needs major change. One solution: proportional representation, where more than one representative is elected for each district, and seats are distributed according to votes for a party.

Portland, Oregon, adopted it in 2025, and its new city council is already more diverse by gender, race and neighborhood representation.

Another idea would be to have the votes of each member of Congress weighted proportionally to their district's population.

When a senator tells a constituent to 'fuck off' because they're "too woke" it signals a major issue with representation. Flip those red states folks - there are coyotes in the coop.

One point of the House of Representatives is to see to it that all states are represented. That may not happen with national "party lists".
A better idea than proportional representation (which won't happen without a constitutional amendment) is ranked choice voting as in Australia. Ranked choice is apparently constitutional.
