The 100th anniversary of the Indian Citizenship Act came and went with little fanfare.

But perhaps that’s no surprise. The legislation was signed into law with little enthusiasm from Native Americans; after all, American citizenship was not an aspiration for the first peoples of the United States.

The act was mainly used as a coercive tool to encourage assimilation.

It would be interesting to compare the promises and direction of the Federalist Papers to what actually transpired. I think you will find plenty of broken promises.
