To Gaza
And despite Israel's death sentences
Like lead
Cast upon the head,
Gnawing at our life,
Clinging to it like a flea to a kitten,
And stuffed in our throats
The moment we say "Amen"
To the prayers of old women and men
Blocking their ways to God,
We dream and pray,
Clinging to life even harder
Every time a dear one's life
Is forcibly rooted up.
We live. We live.
We do.

We want the war to end. We know that we are ordinary
people. We are not invincible warriors. We are not
heroes. We are tired and compassionate. We all want a
better tomorrow. We want to see our loved ones again.
We want to enjoy the simple pleasures of life. I want to
see my brother again. I want to hug my sister and my
daughters. My heart goes out to my uncle for the loss
he has suffered. I wish we could hug our loved ones
and end this pointless war. I dream of seeing my family
again. I dream of spending summer afternoons with
my brother. I wish for peace. My colleague Omar, and
many others in northern Gaza, also dream of peace.
Even if it means sacrificing a day at the barber shop.
Shouldn't these modest aspirations be enough to end
the war?

If I must die
Refaat Alareer
If I must die
you must live
to tell my story
to sell my things
to buy a piece of cloth
and some strings,
(make it white with a long tail)
so that a child
I, somewhere in Gaza
while looking heaven in the eye
awaiting his dad who left in a blaze—
and bid no one farewell
not even to his flesh
not even to himself—
sees the kite, my kite you made, flying up
above
and thinks for a moment an angel is there
bringing back love
If I must die
let it bring hope
let it be a tale

I don't know what I am now. I may
be a slaughtered morning, or a city
that's emptied of all life. I don't
even know how I feel. I may be an
empty land, an uncolored sky, a
childless childhood, a graveless
cemetery, a cup that holds nothing,
sorrow that knows no bounds, a city
in chaos. Everything seems to lead
to the end, or the start of
everything.

I sometimes wonder if the hearts
of people have become stones,
they no longer care about the
stabbed motherhood in Jabalia
or the bruised prophets in
Rafah.
But even stones can break, spill
tears, and lament. Yet their
hearts remain cold and desolate.

I'm not wanting for the war to end, I'm
just waiting for death to halt its relentless
march, just waiting for the kids to sleep
soundly, dine heartily, and embrace their
absent mothers even in slumber.
Waiting for the conclusion of funerals,
the reunion of lovers, the resurrection
of shattered dreams in the hearts of the
young.
I'm not waiting for the war to end, I'm
waiting for life to rekindle in Gaza, waiting
for the golden hues to embrace the
motionless shore at sunset, for laughter
to echo through the streets.
I'm not waiting for the war to end.
I'm not waiting for the war to end, I'm
just waiting for the world to end.

The young father who was
collecting the remains of his
kids for burial in Western
Gaza, forgot to bury himself
too, as he waited for his
remains to be picked up.

flour massacre will not hinder
the mourning birds from
meeting their end, the uprooted
trees from weeping, and the
foreign poems from halting
the covert war, nor will it
impede the transformation
of flour into blood.

THE UNITED STATES TO
ISRAEL WERE THE ONLY
FORM OF AMERICAN
