I've finished: Feersum Endjinn by Iain M. Banks
I miss Iain M. Banks.
I'm trying to read beyond the Culture novels and they are not easy to find in audio.
I've recently found a couple of none Culture Banks novels that have new audiobook editions.
Feersum Endjinn is a novel about the remnants of humanity that decided to stay behind during the human diaspora and how they deal with an imminent threat to life on earth.
The beginning is quite confusing as we are introduced to a world that exists mostly in VR simulations that have evolved for millennia, full of factions and intrigue. But don't worry things do clear up eventually.
Two of the main characters are naïve, and we slowly learn about the world through their experiences. This is one of my favorite tropes.
As a none Culture Banks novel this is the closest one to an actual Culture novel I've read.
