You probably all know this but The clothing industry is the second-largest polluter in the world, after oil and gas.
The fashion industry is responsible for 8-10% of global carbon emissions, more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined.
Also the second-biggest consumer of water, and garment production is responsible for 20% of all global industrial water pollution.
85% of all textiles go to landfill, including the majority of what you take to the charity shop

@aral This is why I'm 34 and I think I still wear at least one pair of pants that my mom probably bought me from JCPennys back in highschool. This is why I have had cardboard covering the holes in my shoes for the past six months.

Yeah that's it...I'm not cheap or lazy or just fuckin autistic or something, I'm *an environmentalist*

(Honestly though, yeah kinda, although certainly a bit of all of the above. I've got a jacket I've sewn back together like a dozen times. Typically using bright red thread on a black jacket because I want you to fucking SEE its history. I am prouder than I have any right to be of my garbage repair attempts)

Also all of this:

Although that does require things to be made well enough in the first place for the repairs to hold...many things aren't these days. So it's a two step process, watch what you buy and then make it last.

@aral
Reason 237,499 that most of my clothing comes from thrift shops. I buy underwear and shoes new. Everything else is bought at secondhand stores.

I would prefer to see more of a distinction made between the "clothing" industry and the "fashion" industry.

To me "clothing" is something you buy when you need it, and you wear it until it disintegrates.

To me "fashion" is something you buy when you don't need it, and you throw it away long before it wears out.

My view would be that whilst we need "clothing" we could manage quite happily without the "fashion" industry altogether.

@TimWardCam I don't think you can separate those things. I think you are conflating two separate concepts. Fashion as self expression is a valuable thing. Punk rock was a fashion movement but also firmly DIY.

Calling it the fashion industry isn't really changing the people responsible for the damage caused by clothing manufacture its just shifting the blame on a group you think should be vilified, imo

I think its sensible to call out 'fast fashion' but I don't think we should demonise fashion

Honestly it's the whole textile industry.

Blankets and other fabric based items all serve this issue.

I'm also a fellow thrifter every 7 or so years. πŸ‘‹
