the cost is far higher than ads. As far as I am aware, they scan all Emails for keywords and even use them for training their AI/LLM's.

If I were still using Gmail, I'd be more concerned that they might be reading my emails to train AI or for any other reason. Ads are unpleasant, but I understand that free services need to make money somehow.
