And they call it ‘progress’

I call it unnecessary destruction

Alas Google is trying to do one of those here in Northern Minnesota near #LakeSuperior and they were extraordinarily underhanded. The community appears to be holding against it for now.

Putting the water and power consumption problems to the side, there are so many vacant commercial properties that have already become concrete that should be used for this instead of destroying nature. Unfortunately, undeveloped land is cheaper.

disgusting. this needs to be stopped AT. ALL. COSTS. they are destoying the earth we love so they can what, track us better? sell us more bullshit? and theyll say its for our own good

😞 😞

This is not going to end well.... climate will finish us all ,sonner or later, if we go on like this....
All for the decisions of a few terrible people....

progress is when that datacenter smokes as much as that warehouse near moscow did yesterday.
in reply to stux⚡️

There are words for it, but Progress is not one of them.

Destruction of the things we need to survive.

It's Texas being run by the maggots. What do you want ... a state that supports humans? Wrong state and wrong country.

was mildy cautious about boosting this at first (in case it wasn't real, I guess?), so looked it up on maps and sure as shit, it's real, and so much worse than I thought.

I’d also like to see a 3D view that shows area temperatures before and after, ie, the dreaded “heat dome”

You'd think there'd be some sort of regulation from the government about this but nah. Their government's even complicit about it, and the people living in that country don't hate their government enough. Hell, it almost seems like nobody cares there.

I mean, from my experience interacting with americans, they seemingly only care about themselves and pretend everything's nice and nothing's happening, lmfao

Bunch of selfish headache inducing bastards. You know how long it takes for trees to fucking grow? It takes YEARS AND YEARS !

Idfk. I feel for the trees, man.. They're just there providing oxygen FOR FREE..

They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum. Then they changed the people a dollar and a half to vibe them.
in reply to stux⚡️

Who needs trees anyway, eh?
We make millions with the datacenter.
in reply to stux⚡️

yet people who complain here still eat beef which is x100,000 this issue. On environment destruction AI datacenters dont even make top 1,000.
in reply to wraptile

@wraptile 👆 Exactly this! People complaining about the environmental destruction of AI while still consuming animal products are at least very inconsistent, to say it nicely.

So sad to see that this post is so underrepresented. Vibes over facts, even on Mastodon. 😢

@erwinrossen @wraptile So what you’re saying is that there is always another bigger issue to worry about?

Both are a problem… The more it’s been talking about the better

in reply to stux⚡️

I don't fully agree. If one problem is 100,000 times bigger than the other, then talking more about the smaller problem than the bigger one is distracting people from solving the big issue. If we have a deforestation problem, it doesn't matter what we're doing with AI, it matters what we're doing with livestock.

but thats not how discussion is in reality. At least you can argue that data centers are needed - it's a complex issue with a lot if waste but also a lot of value. Beef on the other hand is purely entertainment.

My issue with this topic is that it's not found on a stable premise of "let's protect environment" but on cultural luditte movement that boils down to "I dont understand compute, it does not effect me and it's bad for environment". This is bad.

it's interesting because we already have empty industrial districts all over that they could have flattened instead

I saw this before. Beware of the Hurukaï !
Maybe Ents can go now to save time.

on the bright side, instead of having just one forest, they now have two forests 🙃
