#CNN on instagram has video of an example of the #graduation #AI #fail at #Glendale CC in #Arizona
no, that is not Derek Martinez
🤦♂️
and isn't lovely to do all that hard work in college and then in the moment of your success and triumph you're churned through with a robot's voice instead of a fucking human being?
😠
#Graduation #AI #fail seems to be a recurring theme lately
Here's the latest 🍿 for you:
#Glendale community #college in #Arizona used AI to read names
Predictably, it missed people, it had the names out of order, etc
Because, of course, a human reading the names of #graduates and giving them simple decent recognition for their dedication and work is too hard?
This is video of college #faculty trying to explain the debacle. The crowd reaction is not supportive
And oh yeah: Fuck AI
Wired: Meta Employees Are Scrambling to Use Up Benefits Ahead of Layoffs
On the eve of about 8,000 jobs being cut, employees are cashing in on headphone stipends and other perks while they still can.
"...Two employees describe a widespread rush to use up an annual $2,000 flexible benefit, which can cover a variety of expenses including health and wellness activities. A separate triennial credit of $200 toward the purchase of audio gear has led to a scramble to purchase Apple AirPods and other headphones. Another source says Meta offices have been largely empty this week, as people prioritize polishing their résumés and gather offsite to commiserate with friends for what may be their final time as colleagues. Employees are variously “paralyzed,” “coasting,” and “panicked,” sources say...."
Qualitative research matters because some things can’t be measured with numbers alone.
It helps explain how people actually feel, think and experience the world — and that’s why researchers say #AI still can’t replace researchers, even if it can organize some data.

AI interviewers can’t connect with people the way human researchers can – they can produce only data, not meaning
Anthropic developed an AI interviewer it claims can help social scientists conduct research at scale. But AI models lack the human qualities that make qualitative research unique. The Conversation

I am moving to a usage-based billing
Dear employer, I will no longer charger a flat monthly salary, instead I will move to token based billing. Included will be every token I receive as input, including but not limited to emails, slack messages, spoken words and mandatory multi-modal meetings that could have been emails. Included will also be output tokens in the form of code, documentation and small talk. Tokens will also be consumed by my internal monolog as I reason about problems.

That's like saying that Henry Ford created a fully integrated conveyor-belt-human workforce.
An AI™ isn't a member of the workforce, it is a piece of machinery.
We are being subject to a massive marketing campaign to portray machines as persons.
The next step will be legislation to give them legal standing, just as they did with corporations. This will allow the oligarchs that own them to shelter behind yet another legal layer to avoid personal responsibility.
Pizza Hut's AI system caused 'cascading' problems and $100M in damages, franchisee alleges in new suit

> A top Pizza Hut franchisee says the chain's rollout of an AI-powered delivery system turned once-speedy pizza orders into a cold, late-arriving mess — and cratered a business that had been outperforming nearly every other operator in the system.

Google CEO tries to tell University students to love AI. They tell him to BOO off.
It is good to see kids are saying no and fighting back. Do you know why? Because the future of bots, AI and robots doesn't offer any jobs to these young kids. They know greedy AI companies want to get rid of working class. It is simple as that.

Software is inert without a human user, even though modern-day "agentic" apps are doing their best to squeeze human agency out of the loop. The focus on the tech and not how it is used has intensified an old phenomenon: interpassivity.
The vision tech has been pushing (software that "uses itself") has created a synthetic replacement for human agency. It is harder and harder to care, and that is by design.

Another day, another @pluralistic #book, this time pulling together ideas from his various trenchant essays on the subject of #AI: kickstarter.com/projects/docto…
I suspect I'll disagree with some of the nuances (he's strongly opinionated, and I don't always agree with every detail), but he has a lot of good perspective and clue -- it should be fascinating and useful.
And as usual, he's one of the few authors who is not just vocally anti-DRM but puts his money where his mouth is: since Amazon insists on DRM he won't work with them, and instead focuses on independent Kickstarters and the always-wonderful Libro.fm platform.
Looks to be a good read and timely food for thought -- check it out!
