I love the tower of Babel on the cover of the 1969 book Programming Languages: History and Fundamentals by Jean Sammet. This reference work covers the history, basics, similarities and differences of about 120 languages. Of course, there are many I never heard of.

At 820+ pages it's a hefty time capsule of early language research.
