France launches an alternative to Google Maps
#France is retiring Géoportail in favor of cartes.gouv.fr, a free platform that consolidates multiple state mapping services into a single, mobile-friendly alternative to Google Maps and Street View.
“The goal is to create a go-to site for public mapping, supported by a modern user experience that can compete with the US giants as a leading alternative, at least for certain aspects.
cartes.gouv.fr doesn’t rely on real-time traffic navigation or reviews of local businesses, as #Google does. Instead, the platform focuses on the technical depth of its geographic data, which is accessible without requiring an account.
Whereas most apps are mostly limited to a simplified map layout and a satellite view, the IGN interface offers options for overlaying supplementary info: cadastral maps, aerial photos, classic IGN and thematic maps (environment, urban planning, noise, transportation, brush clearing, tourism etc).
Another advantage is that the site includes advanced measurement tools (distances, areas, angles, elevation calculations) as well as a module for calculating isochrones (for measuring an area that can be reached within a defined travel time). These are analytical features that are generally not available on traditional navigation tools.”
