I get the joke about the diagram. On Wikipedia I read, that he was a priest, a mathematician, a supporter of women's rights and a gardener. But, being no native English speaker, I don't really understand the beard *game* thing. He is depicted wearing a beard, though.

yes, its a colloquialism about sporting a beard as a fashion statement....
