The European flags in front of our headquarters in Brussels are at half-mast.

Our thoughts are with the victims of the floods in Spain, their families and the rescue teams.

The floods in Spain are not only a national tragedy. Itโ€™s also a European one.

if only the EU commission had any kind of power to address the root cause of climate change ๐Ÿ˜”

Why implement effective laws and policies with harsh enforcement and penalties against corporations if you can also just lower your flags every once in a while ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ
in reply to European Commission

At least it's not like the EU could have done something to prevent this...
Oh wait โ€” haven't we known that emitting greenhouse gases causes #ClimateChange, for like, decades? ๐Ÿค”
in reply to El Duvelle

@elduvelle to be fair, it's US and China that produce the most CO2 - and we've known for about 100 years now about greenhouse gasses - and the oil companies were the first to know/study it - and they have blocked any actions by lobbying corrupt politicians - make oil-producing companies pay for climate change costs - NOW

@elduvelle China by far the biggest : worldometers.info/co2-emissionโ€ฆ - STOP buying Chinese (and American) crap

@bonno I'm not sure what the reasoning is, do you mean the EU should not care about polluting because some other country is polluting more?
It's quite the opposite: the EU should show the way to a pollution-free economy, even more so if other countries are not pulling their weight. The most polluting countries should be held accountable for their contribution to global warming and the EU can't do that if it's also polluting.
Plus if you take into account the fact that EU countries were historically the ones most polluting , during the industrial revolution, which gave them an economical advantage, you can't just criticise other countries for following the same path.. Instead the EU should be trying to pollute even less and as quickly as possible because they are historically responsible for this mess.

@bonno I certainly agree with buying less products from any country that is far away and/or is a major polluter ๐Ÿ‘

first : buy local experiences (sports, cultural, educational, culinary, ecological ... activities) or just do free stuff (a walk on the beach is free) - this can make you happy in the long run

2nd : buy local sustainable stuff - stuff never makes you happy more than a very short time

3rd : splurge locally once in a while

...

NEVER buy stuff from China

Buy stuff from US only when no other alternative is possible

EU paying for historic pollution while countries that profited from oil/gas production/extraction like Saudis, UAE, Russia don't pay anything (EU already paid for this oil/gas to these countries) is exactly what Aramco, Lukoil etc want - NO WAY - the countries that produced these fossil fuels need to pay first, consuming countries should only pay in a 2nd degree. I do agree that EU should reduce fossil fuel consumption drastically NOW - EU should spend money on that
