Sometimes, I feel like I try too hard promoting my podcast shows. Then, enthusiastic TTRPG folks tell they haven't heard about them. 🤷

So, here's a thread for The RPG Academy Film Studies.

I love our one line reviews.

Do you agree with these?

What's yours?

BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF

2⭐ It's a very long very French film that goes on a little too long and it's...
...it was something.

2⭐ A cheesy bodice ripping comic drama but nonetheless an enjoyable one but far too long.

3⭐ Homo homini lupus. Man is wolf to man.

3⭐ A fun action movie about secret societies in a cool period drama but it's held back by some utterly tasteless decisions and entirely an hour too long.

@neilnjae when we recorded this episode, we could only find the extended director's cut.

I'd really recommend to chase the better paced (as far as I remember) theatrical cut.

😉

in reply to Kalum from The Rolistes

@neilnjae I actually bought this on DVD. I couldn't resist Asian martial arts and werewolves in 18th century France! I need to see which edit it is.
in reply to Kalum from The Rolistes

Brotherhood Of The Wolf also features the funniest "naked lady to snowy landscape" fade I have ever seen. I kind of wish there had been more films like it, but it seems to be very much one of a kind.

@glenatron it made me want to attempt running Call of Cthulhu adventures using Feng Shui.

ARMOUR OF GOD 2
(Three Low-stats Bards & a Min-max Monk)

3⭐ Jackie Chan's attempt at making an Indiana Jones film. It's not his worst. It's not his best. But it's still a fun movie.

3⭐ It taught me that Indiana Jones should have kicked more people in the face.

3.5⭐ The movie does blow away people in the end!

I have a link with this film because they filmed part of the first act just around the corner from home.

@Illuminatus Armour of God 2?

The embassy bits or the motorbike chase? 😮

in reply to Kalum from The Rolistes

The exteriors of the embassy were filmed at one of the gates of the park of el Retiro. The motorbike urban parts were the ones they filmed on the street close by. It's one of the hills that form Madrid but are now under urbanisation, which makes for a lot of streets with a lot of slant.

DELICATESSEN
(Butchers & Feelings)

4.5⭐ Much like in Super Mario, when in doubt pipes lead you out.

4⭐ A dark film with cannibalism, suicide attempts, murder in an apocalypse that manages to create crazy characters in an already crazy world.

5⭐ A most savoury story with a sweet conclusion

EL DÍA DE LA BESTIA
(In Nomine Satanis / Christmas Veritas)

3⭐ Join us, a corrupted priest, an ass*** metalhead and a psychic fraud in their search for Satan!

4⭐ Going chaotic evil with lawful good motivations.

4⭐ It's a roleplaying adventure gone wrong.

Man, you pick up only the best of movies! Delicatessen, Les Pact des Loups, El Dia de la Bestia! Top notch movies for #ttrpg fans! Even more so because they've been filmed outside of Hollywood, making them by default a bit stranger and more unpredictable.
in reply to Glupinickname

@Glupinickname thanks. That means a lot.

I indeed try to pick stuff which I found meaningful to my geeky #TTRPG journey but rather out of the well trodden path.

However, here a couple of bigger ones I should get around recording. 😏

You can find the above and more at https://rolistespod.com/podcast?cat=film-studies

I'd love to read your thoughts on episodes you listen to.

in reply to Glupinickname

Brotherhood of the Wolf, for example, would make for a great Eberron adventure. Day of the Beast was made by Alex de la Iglesias who is a bona fide #CallOfCthulhu #ttrpg fan.
in reply to Glupinickname

@Glupinickname Having Alex de la Iglesia on the show is one of my life goals.

I even already decided upon what movie I'd like to review and who I'd like as second guest but... 🤫

GROUNDHOG DAY
(He can raise his skill stats...
...again and again.)

5⭐ From Lvl 1 to Epic Tier 20 in less than 24h!

5⭐ 10,000 years to finally get your PC to change alignments.

5⭐ Exploring the 5 stages of grief, the comedy - the movie.
