This quote is plain nonsense: “The biggest killer of putting penguin software on the desktop was the Linux community.” Or was it also the BeOS community the biggest killer of putting BeOS on the desktop?
Nope, it was Microsoft actively fighting with all kinds of lawful and unlawful practices against this operating system and dual boot machines. This is why Microsoft had to pay millions of US$ afterwards in a legal battle but it was still a good deal for them (BeOS was superior to Windows in terms of media capabilities back in the days).
When they realized they cannot kill Linux (pardon me, GNU/Linux), they decided to try a sort of friendly takeover. That's what's has been happening recently. If anyone does not know, Poettering (developer of systemd) is paid by Microsoft and Linux development is on Microsoft/Github.
GPL is good, but it falls short where opensource software is used by such a corporation like Microsoft in a way they do it without any financial reward and compensation (I know they support the Foundation and other projects but that's not w

The biggest killer of putting penguin software on the desktop was the Linux community. If you think the Apple fanboys are completely barking, they are role models of sanity to the loudmouthed Open Sauce religious loonies who are out there.
Like many fundamentalists they are totally inflexible - waving a GNU as if it were handed down by God to Richard Stallman.
For the last few years I had been hoping that Linux would finally end up on the desktop as a rival to the closed source universes of Microsoft and Apple. There was an opportunity for it to happen.

That was written in 2010, but is still relevant today, sadly.
