The proportional theory (Paul Janet, 1877): when you're 5, one year is 1/5 of your life. At 50, it's 1/50. Your brain measures time relative to your total lived experience, so each year shrinks in proportion.
The neural frame rate (Adrian Bejan, Duke, 2019): as your brain ages, neural pathways grow longer and more degraded. Electrical signals take more time to travel, so your brain processes fewer "mental images" per second. Fewer frames per second = time feels faster.
And then there's routine: research by Avni-Babad & Ritov (2003) found that repetitive, predictable days encode fewer memory anchors. Your brain compresses routine periods into less remembered time. Novel experiences, by contrast, stretch perceived duration.
