#NewYearResolution2026: Never let people tell you it's impossible to deGoogle your life. 💪

You could also add peertube and matrix chat to your list!
in reply to Tuta

a few suggestions:

Email: Proton (yes yes I know, but you mention them in calendars anyway.)

Translate: DeepL (?)

Browsers: I know they're Chromium, but options like Vivaldi and (reluctantly) Brave aren't half bad.

App Store: Obtainium

Android: Drop Calyx, its not actively being developed right now and is more of a security hazard than anything.

Maps: HEREWeGo (HERE Maps) is honestly pretty alright.

SmartWatch (WearOS): GadgetBridge, Garmin(?)

Google Home: Homeassistant

I'd like to some good non google photo *editors* for storage on my own device.
Ente etc is just storage.
The ones I found are deep in an ai swamp, thats not what I'm looking for.
Any android suggestions for that?
in reply to Tuta

nice list! I'm already using some of those. I suggest Deepl for translation and "Le Chat" for Gemini (ai)!
in reply to Tuta

I liked u added fennec and session in ur list. Still need some more like keepassdx for android, offline translator, another notes/NotallyX. Also add options for files & keyboard because ppls still using Google files & gboard. Alternatives are fossify files or right files and SwiftKey (not foss but 💯 %manageable without internet) or unexpected keyboard. With ente photo u can add aveslibre photo app

never let people tell you they are user friendly though! It really annoys me when “Google alternatives” get promoted that are overcomplicated, ugly, and unusable for normal people.🤷

I honestly think many open-source developers don’t prioritise usability because they assume their products will always be fringe and non-commercial, so UX and onboarding are neglected. It becomes a badge-of-honour exercise to even get them working. 🛠️ 1)

I just tried Aurora Store. The homepage is full of Temu ads (ironically), there’s no clear download path, no proper instructions, and no obvious way to browse apps 📖.

If you want people to adopt alternatives, above all else they must be instantly easy to access, install, and use. Otherwise it’s Dungeons & Dragons level niche interest.🔚

@TheComfortableSpotPodcast are you using Web version of aurora? Use f-droid version with no ads and easy to install any app even downgraded version of app manually.. Latest version 4.8.0with material 3 design (beta version)

@GOKUSHRM I tried using it on an android phone but to be honest, I lost you at "f-droid" and that there is the issue.

@GOKUSHRM which app are you referring to and does that not defeat the purpose?

openstreetmaps is soooo much better. I use mapy.cz as a frontend and it is soo much better for biking and tracking.

I didn't even know half of those browsers. Are the foxes all forked from Firefox?

Suggestions :

Translations:
- Firefox supports downloading models and running locally (either to translate page or direct access in "about:translations")

Android: also list non Android derivatives:
- #SailfishOS <- I daily drive that
- postmarketOS
- UbuntuTouch
They all have (container-based) solutions to run Android apps if necessary (AppSupport, Waydroid)

Also, add fediverse:
- Pixelfed
- Peertube

in reply to Tuta

Just to add that if you use KeepassXC it has a built in authenticator. ctrl-t, ctrl-v fill in the otp validation.
in reply to Tuta

Hey baby, I am a se*x worker. Do you need any services such as video se*x or real se*x . Are you interested?
in reply to Tuta

Yeah, could be, but to be honest, it costs a lot more than f.e. the all in one (mail, storage, photos) price 2,99/month that Apple charges.

I would be fine if that would be 5 or 6 euro, but it's really a lot more.

in reply to Tuta

hey tuta, can you give us a short roadmap to your cloud?

I already switched to tuta mail & calendar, now i want your cloud :ablobcatheartsqueeze:

in reply to Eric

@badger3
Yeah would be dope, I am currently looking for an alternative to Gdrive/Photos too. Would be neat to minimize the amount of logins and different subscriptions to keep track of.
@Eric
in reply to Morgan Nilsson

@morganil @badger3 We've got an early, internal alpha ready, so it should be only a few more months maximum. Stay tuned!
in reply to Tuta

@badger3

That is great! Hope you guys can share more info about it soon!

@Eric
in reply to Tuta

nice, thanks for the short update. can´t wait for it (and with my huge data of ~ 3gb - lol) 😀
in reply to Tuta

Never downloaded anything ever again from google since It wouldn't let me uninstall some program/app back when they started.
How did yall not know they were bad back then?
in reply to Tuta

for authenticator you should also add Ente Auth which is open source
in reply to Tuta

@Tutanota, I appreciate the list as much as I do the comments. Both parts were informative.

Thank you for bringing up less known (imho) alternatives, such as Immich. I truly enjoyed their "Cursed Knowledge" section

@Tuta
in reply to Tuta

A good list! I'm still using Google maps with Android Auto (also Google) - is there any alternative to Android auto?
in reply to Tuta

Al fin una infografía de alternativas a Google con verdaderas alternativas a Chrome.

Eso sí, la categoría de sustitutas de Google Chat podría mejorar, comenzando por quitar Signal. Delta Chat o Monocles Chat/XMPP quedan mucho mejor.

in reply to Tuta

in reply to Tuta

how does one deGoogle when their phone is a Google Pixel?
in reply to Tuta

As usual you just forget about Informaniak. Their suite (email, cloud, office) is really good and their AI Euria work's surprisingly well
in reply to Tuta

✅ in all categories. What's the next challenge? 😁
