Canada is the only North American country that shares a Land Border with the European Union :

On Haas Island, we share the border with Denmark.

Canada is the Only North American Country that shares Maritime Borders with the European Union :

The straight between Newfoundland and the French Islands of St. Pierre et Miquelon;

Plus Greenland.

From Chapter 17 of the Conditions for Membership:

“New Member States are also committed to complying with the criteria laid down in the Treaty in order to be able to adopt the euro in due course after accession.”

Part of being in the EU is the free flow of goods across borders and a common currency is what makes that straightforward without the need for currency exchange processes and bureaucracy.

There are a number of countries in the EU that haven’t adopted the Euro. Sweden and Denmark among them.

Once upon a time,

For one year,

I was Vice-President of the Toronto Dollar local currency :

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toronto_…

I couldn't get enough Board votes to re-jig it,

Resulting in it going into a coma :

That plus my experience with Salt Spring Island Dollars,

When I lived in Vancity,

Informed me on how Canadians might respond to adopting The Euro...

With a slight in-joke and nod the British entering then exiting the EU,

It's not our cup of tea.

Perhaps it was due to the presentation that Toronto dollars didn’t survive.

Canadian Tire money became digital in 2012 and has evolved into Triangle Rewards. Takes the fun away of finding a couple of 10¢ scrip tucked away in the glove compartment though.

As for moving to the euro, the Canadian dollar doesn’t have the long histories of the European currencies that some countries chose to retain. And the argument of having the monarch on our currency would be settled.

Because Iceland is part of Europe… or at least considered part of Europe on the basis of half it being on their side of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Hard argue for Canada when they rejected Morocco.

@Dianora But it’s not separated from Europe, it’s in Europe…. Kind of like Vancouver Island, Newfoundland, Cuba, the Bahamas, and Greenland are part of North America. 🙂

@Daveography @Dianora We can definitely increase our ties with the EU to our benefit. If anything is clear right now it’s that our trade dependence on the US is an issue.

@Chigaze @Daveography @Dianora It may not be in the official EU/EEC rules, but I'm pretty sure that if Canada ever wants to be considered an extended part of Europe, the first step would be to organize a EuroVision Song entry.
