Seems like a small matter of more funding. A 4% success rate for ERC starting grants is a massive waste of opportunity and potential.

Success rate for the #EU Postdoctoral #grants MCSA is now lower (10%) than for #ERC starting grants (12%), and even lower for the ERC advance grants (8%). The UK funding not much better, UKRI grants at 18%, down from a 36% back in 2017.

And I'm expected to get the same amount of funding that people 10 or 15 years ago if I want to keep my job... What a mess.
