Ada Lovelace wrote this poetic observation of computing in her 1843 paper on the Analytical Machine.

Famously, this paper has the first computer program, calculating Bernoulli numbers, making her the first programmer. Additionally, the Analytical Machine was the first Turing-complete computer. Although she is credited on this paper as merely the translator from the French paper, she added extensive commentary doubling its length, in which the quote and program originate.
