Look at the evolution of the popular Chicken Tikka Masala (Wikipedia):

regarding the Catalan stuff, it was forbidden to speak their own mother tongue during the 40-year dictatorship, and still there are sequels and social wounds since then. It may sound as a weird behaviour, but I think it's understandable knowing the context.
