Synthpop has always been an odd style of music. While I'm more drawn to how early groups used as much as they could out of subtractive synths, it becomes so easy to compress and polish up to a later iteration in 'electropop'. A song like this definitely throws a couple good curves on current music trends, and is further from straight homage/pastiche that some aim for.
