Our podcast team caught up with Victor Ambros from his lab to learn more about his #NobelPrize winning research discovering microRNA.

“The fact that the microRNA was the product of this gene that was regulating this other gene in this context was a complete surprise… But sometimes surprises emerge, and in fact, surprises emerge perhaps surprisingly often.”

And to my utter shock and surprise, today in the Nobel Prize for Men,

not one... not two... but THREE men awarded Nobel Prizes! Hurrah!

Currently at 0 for 7....

Han Kang has become the first South Korean writer to win the Nobel Prize in literature, and the eighteenth woman to win the award. The 53-year-old has written poetry, books of essays and novels, including "The Vegetarian," which won the Man Booker Prize in 2016. In its citation, the Swedish Academy commended her for her "intense poetic prose that confronts historical traumas and exposes the fragility of human life.” Here's more from @npr.

"We now have a new dimension to the attribution problem. It’s increasingly unclear whether we will always be able to distinguish between the contributions of human scientists and those of their artificial collaborators – the AI tools that are already helping push forward the boundaries of our knowledge."

It is interesting that both the Physics and Chemistry Nobel prizes for 2024 involved machine learning (aka AI).

This year’s Nobel Prize in chemistry recognizes 3 researchers for their use of machine learning to tackle one of biology’s biggest challenges: predicting the 3D shape of proteins and designing them from scratch.

A fellow chemist breaks it down for us non-chemists:

This year’s Nobel Prize in Physics went to two researchers who pioneered the machine learning techniques that are at the core of ChatGPT generating text, Siri answering questions, and banks noticing fraudulent charges – as well as many other useful innovations.

A statistician clearly explains the breakthrough and what the award of this Nobel means:

To see why #JohnHopfield shared in this year’s physics #NobelPrize, you can do what he did in the early ’80s and build a simple hardware neural network, using the children’s electronics toy SnapCircuits. American scientists have won the #NobelPrize in Physiology or Medicine for their discovery of microRNAs, which regulates gene activity.

These tiny molecules are revolutionizing our understanding of gene regulation and hold promise for treating diseases like cancer.
