Nina Burleigh refreshes our memory about the "October surprise" Republicans pulled in 1980 to kneecap Jimmy Carter and put St. Ronnie in the White House:
"Republican operatives paid off Iranian mullahs with weapons in exchange for slow-walking the release of 52 U.S. hostages — with the goal of making Carter look weak and getting the Gipper (Reagan) elected."
