May’s full moon is the Flower Moon, also known by Indigenous names like the Planting Moon (Cherokee), the Moon of Weeding Corn (Algonquin), and the Field Maker Moon (Abenaki).

Somewhere near its western edge is Carroll Crater, newly named by the Artemis II crew for the deceased wife of Commander Reid Wiseman. What a profoundly human gesture — to grace Luna with names tied to the rhythms of our lives, and to love.

I had the pleasure, for the first time, of inviting some curious passersby up to my porch to share this telescope view. I’m shy in person (plus I have the natural New Yorker caution instincts) but these folks were lovely and it felt good to spread some moon joy. I even impulsively called out @appagalcrochet’s catchphrase, “Keep looking up,” as they were walking away. I guess I’m a proper ambassador for Luna now.😁

Keep looking up!

@appagalcrochet What a lovely thing to do, to invite people to share your joy.

And such a sad but beautiful thing to name the crater after his late wife.

@ambivalena Thanks, Lena! It was unexpected and fun.

And yes, the naming of Carroll Crater was deeply moving — I was watching the livestream from the spacecraft when they did this. Was very touched by how they embraced and shed tears as they suggested the name.🥹

I missed that, unfortunately, since I was visiting part of my family, but I can imagine how emotional it must have been to watch.
