It may only have been 90% partial, but we had a good time watching the eclipse with many locals atop the 40 metre Teltschikturm at 530 metres up in the Odenwald. Stunning location.

The Sun was still partly eclipsed as it set over Mannheim & the Pfalz across the Rhine Valley.

Did a live radio with LBC from up there & a long piece with BBC News TV when I got home.

Next year totality with the family in Spain (again), I hope.

Wild And Free

In the late 18th century, reindeer from Norway were introduced to Iceland as a livestock experiment which failed. Hard winters and limited food supply quickly proved too challenging, and they were considered extinct.

Nobody told the reindeer this, and a few managed to survive. Today, there are thousands of them living mainly in the Eastfjords.

November: A large group of them is grazing in Mýrar in south-eastern Iceland. The glacier is Fláajökull.

March 2015, and a frustrating morning spent trying to image the partial eclipse from our home in Fife.

I had a small success with a kitchen colander, but nothing I tried gave me a satisfying result. I went upstairs for a break and walked into my bedroom, where a crystal was hanging in the window.

Spread across the bedroom wall were lovely rainbow crescents, dozens of them.

For tomorrow, I have my telescope with a solar filter, so no worries!

A new solar lighthenge discovery 🌞🙂

Walked into my bedroom at just the right moment this afternoon to find this beautiful patch of illumination on the wall.

It’s sunlight reflected from a dormer window on a house down the valley to the south, sneaking through a narrow gap into my balcony door. The leaf shadows are vines on the neighbour’s wall.

Lasted just a minute & I may never see it again given the angle, time of day & year, & brevity.

Actually... not a duck. It's a giant snowy egret, standing in shallow water. This also-not-a-swan is facing to the right, long neck extended upward. It is reflected beautifully in the water of a tidal pond at Point Reyes National Park. The photo was taken a year ago. It's one of two dozen pictures I snapped of this bird on a day when I was feeling like a naturey gay rather than a city gay. Monochrome. Bright exposure.
