Most of you here know me as a writer, but first (and maybe foremost) I am a photographer. And on that note, I have an announcement.

There is a philosophical tradition that insists we are not vessels moving through the world separate from it, but instead in continuous exchange with it. The places we move through, the weather we stand in, the land we work on and shape, the social forces we encounter. They get in, they change us. We are made of them

Ein hellblauer, wolkenloser Himmel wölbt sich über einer weiten, spiegelglatten Wasserfläche, die im Hintergrund von einem schmalen Uferstreifen mit grünen Bäumen begrenzt wird. Im Vordergrund liegt ein schmales, hellgrünes Holzboot im seichten, klaren Wasser, das zur Hälfte gesunken ist, sodass das dunkle Innere und die hölzernen Sitzbänke unter der Wasseroberfläche sichtbar sind. Zwei braune Ruder ragen schräg aus dem Boot heraus und stützen sich auf eine verwitterte Holzpalette am unteren Bildrand. Links ragen hohe, vertrocknete Schilfhalme in warmen Beigetönen steil nach oben und bilden einen markanten vertikalen Kontrast zur horizontalen Weite des Sees. Der sandige Grund unter dem flachen Wasser ist durchsetzt mit Steinen und Pflanzenresten, während sich das sanfte Sonnenlicht auf der gesamten Szenerie spiegelt und eine friedliche, fast einsame Frühlingsatmosphäre schafft.

A wide-angle view, looking up from the sidewalk at Saint Paul's Catholic Church in Noe Valley, San Francisco. Monochrome. Built between 1897 and 1911, this massive stone church with two tall spires stands tall... but also squats heavily near the southern end of Church Street. It is hard to miss. Anyway, the church was featured in the 1992 Whoopi Goldberg movie Sister Act. Near the end of the movie, the fictional Pope (who was soft on crime) attended a concert... where Whoopi and her singing nuns sang My Guy (referring informally to God) with great volume and enthusiasm.

We discovered the Bleu Horses (not a spelling error) out near Three Forks, Montana yesterday. They're quite interesting sculptures, made by Jim Dolan, that have features that move in the wind. Manes and tails, obviously, from the photos... but also some of them will move their heads when the wind gusts! #photography #montana

Moon In The Morning

Driving up the east coast of Iceland on a brisk winter's day, the low sun barely warmed us. As we reached this isolated place between two mountain ranges, we could see that the head of the fjord was almost untouched by the weak sunlight.

The waning gibbous moon was the perfect final touch.
