Me 6 months ago: hmmm PeerTube looks really interesting but I don’t understand how I can use it. Do I have to create a new account? Pick an instance? But which one? Nah, too complicated, I’ll check back some other time.

Me today: oh YunoHost has PeerTube in its list of apps. Maybe I’ll host my own single-user instance! 🤗

Bandwidth is the killer.

I would like #peertube to succeed...
But I don't know how that is possible.

My community TV station (c44.com.au) run a "streaming" service for a few years, and we have tried a few hosting sites..

...every time what killed us was bandwidth costs. Any remotely successful programs blew the cap for the month.

I don't see how you can avoid that.

@n_dimension The P2P feature of PeerTube allows you to diminish the use of bandwidth, by a lot : 75% in the case of a live stream, up to 98% for videos !

sry, don't take it personally but APP is an aplication in a cellphone.

If Yunohost offers the service of hosting Peertube instances it offers a platform (or something like that).
:)

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

Looks like I will have to dig into yunohost itself.

That said, languages evolve and devolve, apparently.

I consider this a devolution due to real life use by the "users".
:)

Also, just for your and your followers knowledge.
There is a podcast software for the activityPub web that can host audio and video and is build for the use in shared hosting environments. Haven't seen it on yunohost on a first glimbs. Depending on you skills and actual circumstances that can be another option to host video.
friendica for example doesn't fit for shared hosting, I guess peertube neither. Can't remember the podcats software (APP) name right now but it's out there.
in reply to mʕ•ﻌ•ʔm bitPickup

I believe @Castopod is the podcast software that has activityPub and RSS capabilities, can host video and can be installed on a standard shared hosting.

It figures on yunohost too:

@nicholasr about a month… it gives me a lot of confidence / hubris, depending on how you look at things 😆

It’s soooo easy to use, even for a total newbie. I would 1000% recommend it

in reply to Nicholas R

@nicholasr I have a basic VPS plan – 4 GB of memory, 4 TB bandwidth, 50GB disk space.

The resources I'm using so far with GoToSocial and Phanpy are minimal...

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

thanks for sharing the resources you are using. 🙂 That gives me some ideas

We have a #k8s cluster that hosts a number of app including our Mastodon app. I was hoping we could get it to run there.

We also have some ARM based devices so we can do some testing...

#k8s
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

thanks for mentioning #GoToSocial
github.com/superseriousbusines…

I see it is written in #Go and #Typescript. I doesn't surprise me it is resource friendly 🙂

Also, I had not heard of #Phanpy. This is an interesting #Mastodon web client.

in reply to Nicholas R

@nicholasr Phanpy.social is THE BEST (I basically type this at least once a day, LOL)
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

from your recommendation, I just started using it. So far it is the best #Mastodon client 🙏🙏🙏🙂

I'm running a single-user instance at the moment and so far it feels pretty good. My main issue is finding good instances to federate with, everything seems either really quiet or just not my kind of thing. Some of the instances I like just don't federate at all, which I understand but it's a real shame.
in reply to Dr Zoyander Street

@zoy oooh interesting, thank you for sharing 🙏

Out of curiosity, is it using a lot of resources?

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

So far it's costing me about $15 a month, I'm certainly nervous about what will happen as I add more content and especially if it gets any traffic.
in reply to Dr Zoyander Street

@zoy oh that's a lot. Have you turned on the P2P function?

FYI: framapiaf.org/@peertube/113760…

that's really pretty cool - I wasn't aware of YunoHost. Looks likes a thing that makes the start ways easier
in reply to Franz Graf

@hikingdude YunoHost is THE BEST - it empowers me to do a lot of complex things even if I'm a total newbie
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

I spent some time looking for VPS prices now. This is really tempting! Last time I was checking, the VPS prices were quite higher. But with 1-3€/Month it's really not worth the effort to have a raspi at home.

Thank you Elena for bringing that back to my mind. An own peertube-instance just for my own stuff would be quite tempting

in reply to Franz Graf

@hikingdude thank you Franz. Indeed, a VPS can be pretty affordable these days.

I was nervous at the idea of having an always on Raspberry Pi as a home server. I have routine micro-outages at home (internet-wise), so that was not an option.

A VPS gives me peace of mind, especially when I'm traveling

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

Right this, plus - what concerns me even more: if an attacker breaks the service, it's bad enough. But if he's getting shell access to somewhere INSIDE my home network, this could get unpredictable bad.
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

Following my latest poll (asking you to vote on the next Fediverse project I will cover), I will test #PeerTube and publish an article about it next month on #TheFutureIsFederated.

I’m just rethinking logistics: I may join an existing instance (and donate to it to support server costs).

Why? While backing up my #GoToSocial account I noticed the backup file ballooned from 280MB to 7.7GB after just one week of use (😱). I need to be mindful of resource usage for my #VPS.

#NoAdvice needed thx 😅

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

I'm also looking into hosting GoToSocial, I'm curious about how the backup works. If you're up for giving advice: Is it possible to backup only things you posted not all the federation? Having gone through it, would you recommend setting it up any different than the default documentation?
in reply to shom 🐧📷🤿🏔️🪚✊🏽

@shom in YunoHost you can backup any module but not pick and choose inside them. So you could decide to only backup GtS but not Phanpy or other apps you’ve installed… I hope it makes sense!

And I LOVE it so far, would highly recommend it

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

ah, the backup strategy is setup by Yunohost, makes sense, thanks!
So good to hear, I'm excited to do it, just waiting for editing posts to get released (I'm typo blind until I hit post regardless of many proofreading attempts 😆)
in reply to stereo

@stereo thanks Ralf! I was wondering if it had anything to do with Bridgyfed… or the fact I’m now following 200+ accounts and maybe GtS is caching every post in my feed? Is that a possibility?

@shom

This peer tube channel is useful :

tube.jeena.net/c/peertube_admi…

I found the initial video

And then its most recent upload live-reviewing of version Peertube version 7

both helpful in understanding it overall.

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

looking forward for your article. i have some animation shorts i would like to publish and still unsure which platform to choose
in reply to pedro oliveira

@cerebroelastico thanks Pedro! As a longtime filmmaker / film editor (currently on hiatus) I always defaulted to Vimeo - like all my creative colleagues. Curious to see how PeerTube works :)
