Is the #Mastodon 500 character post length limit still meaningful in 2025?

Originally, Twitter introduced a 140 character length limit in 2006 because of the technical limitations of old school SMS texts which were used by the Twitter system back in the day.

But is there still a real technical advantage to the limit now, two decades later?

Because if not, I would certainly prefer not having to split my posts into multiple posts.

I searched on a #mastodon forum for answers to my question " #NoBot no longer works, what current hashtag prevents s bots from following accounts?" and do not yet have an answer.

Thus I ask the #fediverse: what can users do with their profiles to repel bot-follows?

I'm curious about this:

If there were more tools/resources/services available for small community servers, would you be more inclined to bring your friends/community onto the fediverse?

The classic social media problem of "everyone wants to socialize-very few want to run infrastructure"- that can lead us to the same centralization problem we see in mainstream platforms.

If there was for example a well documented open source self-hostable activitypub implementation specifically made for small communities , I think that would be great for the fediverse.

I'm working on a project I'm really excited to share soon, but I wanted to get some thoughts :D

Is #Fediverse or #Mastodon structurally more resilient to mass bot accounts? I know that for the moment it seems so, but I'm sure that is primarily because the market is relatively so small, that investing in that makes little sense.
Yet, we are coming closer to situation where AI will be capable to register indistinguishable accounts (or maybe we're here). At the same time, FB might (hopefully) enshittify itself to unbearable levels, which combined to unreliable US policies can make many democracies really hostile to it.

So, my question is: are there serious arguments for fediverse being somewhat futreproof to hostile bots? Can it be projected as a go-to solution for masses, in theory, or will there be a need for some very different long term solution?

I like making my Mastodon fork behave exactly the way I want. One feature I miss from other platforms is videos that autoplay and loop muted. I'm going to implement that in my fork, just like on those other platforms. It will respect the system-wide reduce motion setting.

My goal is to keep Mastodon core as close to vanilla as possible and not overload it with features like glitch-soc, just improve the things I want, both in UI and functionality.

Being a MastoAdmin is nice, you get to build your own tools and learn new things.

Mastodon Bird UI support for Mastodon v4.6.0 with CSS properties is coming soon. The theme will also be modularized using SCSS partials to match Mastodon's new style infrastructure.

The build process will include npm scripts and Parcel, making the theme ultra-portable for any Mastodon instance, whether added through the Custom CSS textarea or directly by a Mastodon admin.

I'll also create a simple bash script for Mastodon admins to enable the theme as a selectable option more easily than the current fork-and-cut method.

This is no easy feat, but definitely worth it.

really, really impressed with posty: a mastodon archive -> html static site generator

it ingests your mastodon archive (post history) as a zip, and barfs out an entire static html site with indices and tags. all servable with any standard web server.

this is super helpful because when i shut down the dialup.cafe instance, there was no easy way to get access to my old posts and images.
