I'm glad they're realizing that twitter is dead but yeah, I wish they (and many others journals / websites) stopped forgetting #Mastodon all the time. We exist! We are having fun! No, we (probably) don't have an advertising department that asks everybody to write article about us but it doesn't mean we should be forgotten!

We make good use of Mastodon’s interoperability with WordPress. When we recently moved our Vivaldi Tips (@tips) blog from vivaldi.net to vivaldi.com to start translating the tips, we noticed that things were a little off on the Mastodon side. Luckily we have the amazing @thomasp in our team, who ironed out every single issue we found.

One of the problems we had was the ActivityPub plugin not detecting the language tags our translation plugin (WPML) added to the posts on WordPress. Language tags allow people on Mastodon to subscribe to posts only in the languages they can read and use the translation feature, so this was an important issue for us to solve. The #fediverse has a problem, and I’m going to be very unhelpful in not having an idea how to fix it.

Once an instance gets popular, it’s processing, storage and traffic costs get prohibitive for the people running it.

I regularly see reports of #mastodon instances shutting down because the admins can no longer afford the hosting costs. This will only be worse when #pixelfed and #loops spin up.

I like this #RespectfulPlatforms charter! But I don't quite get something...

When it comes to #Mastodon, it would have to be the individual Mastodon instances who could join the pledge, right?

Mastodon-the-Software could certainly be considered a "platform" in some sense. But while they can definitely claim their software complies with many of the charter's provisions (e.g. item "Accessible Reporting System" in the "Safeguards Against Hate Speech" section), I think that they cannot make statements about moderation (e.g. "Zero Tolerance Policy", "Clear Community Standards" in the same section, plus most of the "Strong Protections for Vulnerable Communities" section).

Come to think of it, there's a similar problem with #Pixelfed-the-software vs Pixelfed-the-flagship-instance...

What's your take on this?

Recently I noticed there is a #Mastodon setting/feature where one can choose hashtags to feature on their profile. Not every Mastodon user interface shows the hashtags though. But for those that do use them, I find it's a great way of quickly getting to know a user by viewing their posts by hashtag topic.

Anyone else using this feature? It's making me want to use hashtags in all my posts from here on out.

Assholes in this world have made me very cynical.

I feel that every time I login to Fedi these days, there's yet another scheme to get people to dump money into a project for "the growth of the Fediverse" yet we have yet to see any results and the things they're doing seem shady as fuck to me. Yet people keep parading around like it's the best thing ever.

SWF forms and is funded by major companies like Meta and Auttomatic. Not sure how that could be a good thing. That means SWF will be financially influenced by these companies and there's nothing anybody can do to change that.

Now, Mastodon is being given to a new non-profit. They say this is to "give the power back to the people" but obviously giving ownership to a non-profit doesn't do that...it gives ownership to the non-profit and allows them to hide your donations via shady legalities to enrich themselves.

Money hungry fucks ruin everything. Change my mind.

As Mastodon allows its users to filter which posts they want to see based on language I thought it might be fine to use one account to post in English, German and Swedish - even though some of my followers might not speak all of these language and possibly could get annoyed by posts they don't understand.

Excellent news to see. Setting up legal constructs for non-profits is surprisingly challenging, so this is a big development for #Mastodon. It'd be nice to see more legal resources available for other communities looking to do similar things.
