@GoblinQuester I've only read the SF, after Russ Allbery recommended the first one. Not a huge fantasy fan but if you feel positively I may give one a try.

They are a bit special, but I highly recommend his short form historical to try out his style. He writes them under the name Christian Cameron and Tom Swan is the series name.
He has a number of others in various times of history from Classic to late medieval
