There’s an historic home downtown from the 1800’s that had a ginormous old cottonwood tree growing in front of it. Unfortunately, the tree got badly damaged in a storm a few years ago and had to be cut down. But they left the huge stump in place and recently turned it into a free library with a full-sized door, plus the same style cupola and slate roof tiles as the house. It’s pretty cool. 📚🌳

Top story: Once the majority has decided a marginalized group is the demon in one part of a story, it’s easier to paint them as demons in another. To counter this, we need to look at gender-expansive athletes in a detailed and holistic way. texasobserver.org/trans-athlet…

Jetzt auf deutsch erschienen:
"Enshittification.

Our local independent bookshop has a monthly ‘mystery book’ subscription. The staff have hand-crafted teeny tiny editions of each title they’ve included so far. Each book cover is a faithful rendition of the real one. Amazon could never. AI could never.

Today in Labor History May 10, 1933: The Nazis staged massive public book burnings, beginning in Berlin, with students from Humboldt University, destroying thousands of titles. German poet, Heinrich Heine, said back in the early 1800s, "Where one burns books, one will soon burn people." They burned books written by Jewish, half-Jewish, communist, socialist, anarchist, liberal, pacifist, lgbtq and sexologist authors. The first books burned were those of Karl Marx and Karl Kautsky. Many of the books that were burned were seized from the library of Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld, director of the Institute for Sexual Science (Institut für Sexualwissenschaft), which the Nazis raided in Berlin on May 6, 1933.

One of my biggest regrets from the past few years was losing the habit of reading books. All the usual excuses: child to look after, too tired, not enough time…

I didn’t read a ton, but I had an average of 30 books a year. Last year I must have read 6. This year in early April I was at 0… and the realization shook me to my core.

Something had to be done.

I found out about KOreader and SimpleUI - having on an e-reader homepage a bar with reading stats would be an incredible motivator… I thought.

Jailbroke my #Kindle, installed #KOreader and #SimpleUI. And 18 days later I have… an 18 day reading streak and I’m averaging 43 minutes of reading time per day. I’m just so happy! 😊

(Unrelated but #Technofeudalism is REALLY GOOD - off to go resume reading it for another 20 minutes or so).

Wistman's Woods, on Dartmoor, Devon, are allegedly haunted by hellhounds. 'Wistman' is a dialect word for the Devil, with 'wist' meaning 'eerie' or 'uncanny'. The woods and their legends are said to have inspired the Sherlock Holmes mystery 'The Hound of the Baskervilles'. The woods are one of Britain's few surviving patches of ancient temperate rainforest. #FairytaleTuesday #folklore #gothic #literature #weird #ghosts #paranormal #books #history #mythology

Daniel Kraus Wins 2026 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction with Angel Down as a “breathless novel of World War I, a stylistic tour-de-force that blends such genres as allegory, magical realism and science fiction into a cohesive whole, told in a single sentence.”

A binman in Turkey’s capital found a bag of thrown-away books on his rounds and couldn’t bring himself to take it to the dump. He kept it. Other workers started doing the same. The pile has now grown into a public library of over 9,000 books, run by sanitation workers, in an old brick factory 📚

John Hollander’s poem Kitty and Bug is self-explanatory in its simplicity. The cat’s unpunctuated, almost stream-of-consciousness thoughts fit into a physical ‘cat’ shape, while the bug – in sharp contrast – is but a 3-letter word near the edge of the page.

Happy birthday Sir Terry Pratchett. The more the world gets more cruel and unfair, the more I miss him.

Plus the Vimes boots theory remains the greatest piece of economics ever written.

Today is Harper Lee’s 100th birthday.

Born in a small town in Alabama, where her father worked as a lawyer, Lee loved #books. One of her childhood friends was Truman Capote, who spent time in #Monroeville as a boy. Years later, she turned the world she knew into a novel about the difficult bravery of doing what is right when the world refuses to do so.

Do you like her novel To Kill a Mockingbird?

Hi friends, I’m hoping someone here may be able to help…

I have just one copy of my 2011 book, The Science of Kissing, published in Japanese. I would like to buy another to share with a friend in Japan, and do not know how to find it.

Mastodon has proven a very smart community, and I’d appreciate any guidance to point me in the right direction? Thank you. #books
