P.s. Tor over Chrome? Are you really suggesting Tor Browser as a daily drive?

in reply to Tuta • • •P.P.S.: honestly: how many non-geek (yet mor than average) people do you think will find such a plan acceptable in daily life?
And how do you think they'll react to frustration?

in reply to Tuta • • •if I may, Monnett is a closed-source for profit app. A better alternative to Instagram would be @pixelfed
And Tor Browser may scare off newbies, while @Vivaldi is super user friendly and privacy-focused π€

in reply to Elena Rossini π • • •I think you have to be pragmatic with browsers. Different shitty corporate sites work or don't work on different browsers so I end up switching to whatever works on the day.
This includes Vivaldi although that one isn't open source.

in reply to Elena Rossini π • • •@_elena @pixelfed @Vivaldi I think it is important to remember, that using Chromium-based browsers (like Vivaldi) supports the ecosystem around Chrome - and thereby Google itself.
Just use Firefox already. π

in reply to Tuta • • •WhatsApp -> DeltaChat (E2EE, open-source, distributed/federated, not US based, free, easy to host)?
DeltaChat also has restructured their architecture towards ChatMail protocol only there is no longer a confusion over "Is it mail? Or not?" so even Tuta should be able to market it without thinking you are "promoting" a competitor.
As DeltaChat servers doesn't store messages over time it is also an even more secure option than Matrix for individuals (whereas entities/companies that need to log and track all correspondance might benefit more from Matrix/Element as it is nigh on impossible to be certain a deleted message actually is deleted everywhere).

PixelFed will be a better drop-in replacement.
Also, Tor isn't supposed a day-to-day browser.
I'll do:
- Gmail β Tuta / Proton / Mailbox.com
- Google Doc β CryptoPad / LibreOffice / OnlyOffice
- WhatsApp β Signal / Wire / Session / Element (or FluffyChat) / DeltaChat
- Chrome β Mullvad / Brave / LibreWolf
- IG β PixelFed

in reply to Tuta • • •really weird of you to promote a closed, proprietary social network from a free, open social network...
Too many products are trying to be the new Facebook, but splitting users across all these new alternatives ensures none of them will succeed. The fediverse on the other hand is only strengthend by more applications joining the network. It will outlive the wave of new social media apps.

in reply to Tuta • • •Gmail > Addy & Tuta. Best if each accounts has their own email alias.
Google Docs > LibreOffice. Offline and far more private. Usually come preinstalled on Linux.
WhatsApp > SimpleX. Signal could leave this year if Bill C-22 passes in Canada.
Tor Browser > Gets blocks far too often, Mullvad is my preference. It was made in partnership with the Tor project.
Android browser > Forks of Mozilla browsers are too insecure.
Vanadium's adblocker is very basic.
Brave works best for me. It has security, privacy, adblocking, and speed.
Instagram > Pixelfed? I don't use this style of social so I can't say whats good or not.

in reply to Tuta • • •Recommending a non-open source social media app simply because it is Europe-based is so stupid. Then there's the fact that the app requires you to download via Google Play or the App Store unless you go the unsupported route. If they support direct APK downloads, it isn't obvious.
βAllβ of their external links lead to proprietary social media! Even to Microsoft's LinkedIn! Who is approving these posts?!
The priority should be open source first, European second.
Stop being dumb.
