“One way to achieve the desired level of integration is to control the entire software stack, right down to the operating system … on a new technologically advanced operating system tentatively named ‘KDE Linux’”

This. Finally. Yes.👆

And, hopefully, folks like @starlabssystems can take this further and add hardware to the stack: e.g., The StarBook is designed for KDE Linux. You can run any distribution on it but everything works 100% on its default OS. https://floss.social/@akademy/113123668949310341

The only way Linux-based devices will compete successfully with the mainstream devices used by everyday people who use technology as an everyday thing is if there are organisations that step up and accept responsibility for the whole *experience*. We need a “the buck stops here” approach to free and open source instead of “it’s an upstream issue” approach. And device manufacturers like StarLabs are the natural place for this.

have you had a look at SteamOS and the Steam Deck? It has an easy way to access desktop mode from gaming mode, a consistent app store/management system. When I've had issues I'm able to search 'steam deck desktop mode' along with my query and be fairly confident the answer won't be hamstrung by a random hardware issue. I'm getting into game development on Linux, via Godot and Blender. And it's really opened a door that was not closed per se but maybe sticky to open before.

@martycoote Yeah, that’s a great example. Also: looking forward to seeing what you make :)

@overanalytcl @system76 Yep. But after recent interactions and how they responded to me calling out the lack of a fully functional screen reader in the major Linux distributions, I’d rather not have anything to do with them.
