2.51+ releases are rolling into stores: Video/Audio Calls and Channels are not experimental but part of the default feature set now 💫

Calls and channels are always end-to-end encrypted, and only you and your contacts know each other's identity and metadata (avatars, names, keys etc.)

For calls, Delta uses a minimal Rust WebRTC turn server github.com/chatmail/chatmail-t… running on hundreds of relays worldwide. It helps to establish P2P media streams, or for relaying traffic if P2P connections fail.

here are the full release notes: github.com/deltachat/deltachat… -- also a lot of bug fixes option cleanup, as we are continuing to make settings fail-safe and easy to understand for mass users, sometimes to the detriment of more nerdy configurations. However, contrary to some claims, using classic email server setups is fine, but you need to use a dedicated email address. Sharing an address with a different email client is not supported. If you have any issue, please report support.delta.chat

but, most importantly, does the cat have its own chatmail profile? 😻 😜

Joke aside, a lot of nice features now widely available!

superb app been using it for over a year and so simple thank you
in reply to Truth Collector

@collective_truth it's using WebRTC with mandatory end-to-end encryption which internally gets negotiated through end-to-end encrypted chat signalling messages.

MY GOD THAT IS HUGE #e2e - So I can use Google email + Delta chat to do end-to-end encrypted chat signalling messages without Google really know the details (maybe some metadata or generally seeing message but not contents / video chats?)

in reply to Truth Collector

@collective_truth no, video distribution is a quite different topic and challenge than supporting 1:1 calls in chats.

YouTube ourselves using DeltaChat...?

OK I was shooting for the moon there asking (not expecting you to do it either because the original post was big enough news itself).

SO BIGGEST POSITIVE COMPLIMENT is that you reply on #Mastodon

Nearly all the other developers don't (it's almost all 1-way posting or not good enough to dedicate time to fans / users / non-developers supporting them even on other platforms)

SO THANKS FOR REPLIES !

great news! Two questions:

Where can I find out more about the purpose of channels?

Are calls coming to group chats?

in reply to Amin Girasol

@fluidlogic best place to ask and get more background is support.delta.chat

Also in the FAQ there is info like on channels: delta.chat/en/help#channels
